Position Description:
Our client Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) is a Tanzanian public referral
hospital with a mission to provide effective, efficient and high quality
tertiary specialist medical services for referred patients from all areas of
Tanzania, while providing a conducive environment for teaching and research.
To fulfill its mission in the Central Pathology Laboratory (CPL) MNH has
collaborated with the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MoHSW) and Abbott
Fund Tanzania (AFT) and “to pilot a new framework for delivery of the highest
standards of care to all patients in a sustainable way within the existing
public health care setting in Tanzania”. The CPL is the leading institution for
quality laboratory service in Tanzania. To sustain and grow in success MNH has
embarked on a path to establish sustainability. This position is a unique

Laboratory Manager -Central Pathology Laboratory (CPL)
MNH intends to appoint a Laboratory Manager to take charge of the Central
Pathology Laboratory and training leaders in the field of clinical laboratory.
The Lab Manager should be an experienced leader in the field of clinical
laboratory who can take an energetic and motivated team to the next level; Our
laboratory staff at the CPL are the first in East and other parts of Africa, to
be specifically trained on hi-tech automated laboratory equipment.
This position is responsible to oversee the functions of the Central Pathology
Laboratory in accordance to the requirements of the ISO 15189. The key role is
to ensure operational effectiveness and sustainability activities for provision
of quality laboratory services to the patients being attended at the Muhimbili
National Hospital and referred samples from across the country. The role
reports to the Head of Department-CPL and supervises Automated Laboratory
Supervisor, Special Laboratory Supervisor, Quality Officer, Safety Officer and
Medical Specialists.
Roles and responsibilities
To ensure laboratory capacity is improved and sustainable to meet the current
needs and future developments;
To ensure laboratory process improvements and coordinate supply chain
management;
To conduct laboratory assessments, including developing strategies and prioritization
recommendations for the execution of the set strategies;
To ensure staff compliance, certification of instrument performance, arranging
instrument replacement, service and repair;
To maintain and ensure execution of a Quality assurance program, consulting
with Pathologists on services and developments, performing of proficiency
surveys, making suggestions for adjustments in policy and procedures;
To ensure compliance with government and professional continuing Minimum
Qualification licensure requirements by providing in service programs and
monitoring outcome;
To guide management and staff through laboratory accreditation and process
improvement that are critical to long term accreditation and smooth laboratory
work flow;
Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the H.o.D
Qualifications and experience required
Bachelor’s degree holder in Medical Laboratory Sciences or its equivalent with
postgraduate qualifications in management, laboratory sciences, medical
technology, health administration or public health;
Registered with all necessary government licensure bodies;
A minimum of not less than 5 years’ experience in Laboratory management;
Experience managing overall lab operations;
Strong analytical approach to problem solving;
Good communication skills – English – written and oral;
People management skills, solid judgment; and ability to assess risks; and
Proven knowledge and competence in computer skills (Microsoft word, excel,
power point).
