Description:
Since its origins in Yellowstone 140 years ago, the idea of a national park has
evolved worldwide to encompass landscapes that are wild and built, natural and
cultural. Common to all national park sites are the dual purposes of the
conservation of the ‘special qualities’ of designated places, alongside the
right of the public to understand and enjoy those places. This research
investigates the role of built environment design within the parks context,
focusing on the ways in which the creative design and physical modification of
landscapes can contribute to both these fundamental aims.
