MiningWatch Canada works with environmental, social justice,
Aboriginal and labour organizations to support communities affected by
mining, do research on issues pertaining to mining, environment, and
health, and advocate for accountable mining practices. Our mandate
includes mining in Canada and the international operations of Canadian
mining companies.

MiningWatch Canada has a small staff team with a shared management
model and no clerical or secretarial support; such tasks are shared by
all staff.

Responsibilities

The Canadian Program Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the
organization’s activities in Canada including:
• Networking, building relationships and facilitating learning
oportunities with other organisations, community groups, Indigenous
communities and organisations, technical experts and activists;
• Building relationships with funders and support institutions;
• Researching and analysing mining companies, project feasibility, and
environmental impacts;
• Analyzing and promoting the reform of mineral development law and policy;
• Ensuring existing laws and policies are used to their full potential;
• Engaging with government through lobbying, multi-stakeholder
initiatives and formal consultation processes;
• Developing and implementing specific campaigns targeted at
governments and industry;
• Responding to media requests, and proactively engaging with
conventional media, social media and independent media outlets.

Requirements

The successful candidate will have a solid understanding of the
environmental, social, economic, and political context of mining in
Canada; demonstrate a commitment to social justice, the environment,
and human, Aboriginal, and labour rights and to the mandate and
philosophy of MiningWatch Canada. S/he will also have a demonstrated
ability to work independently and as part of a team, and will be
fluent in English and French (with other languages, including
Aboriginal languages, considered an asset). The position requires a
considerable amount of travel throughout Canada and to a lesser degree
internationally. Only candidates with permission to work in Canada
will be considered.

Preference will be given to candidates who have:
• Relevant post-secondary education;
• Relevant work experience, preferably with non-governmental organizations;
• Experience working with Indigenous communities and organisations;
• Technical knowledge of different aspects of mining and its impacts;
• Experience working in different parts of Canada and the developing world;
• Communication skills developed for various target audiences and outlets;
• Organising skills including strategic thinking and campaigning,
building movements and coalitions, facilitation and shared leadership,
chairing meetings, and working with groups;
• Institutional skills including project management, relating to
foundations and other funders, financial development and management,
and Board support.
