Ontario’s Greenbelt is an area of permanently protected green space,
farmland and vibrant communities. It surrounds the Golden Horseshoe,
and is vital to the quality of life in southern Ontario.
The Friends of the Greenbelt
Foundation is a charitable organization,
focused on supporting activities that preserve and enhance the
agricultural, rural and environmental integrity of Ontario’s
Greenbelt. The Foundation undertakes or funds research and analysis
to:
(i) develop a better understanding for the implementation of the
Greenbelt Plan and other land use plans and policies;
(ii) advance possible revisions to Greenbelt-specific and
Greenbelt-relevant policies, including in agriculture, conservation
and the environment; and,
(iii) assist in increasing awareness and understanding of the Greenbelt.
Responsibilities
The Research and Policy Analyst works independently and in
collaboration with the Vice President, Research and Policy and
Research Assistant. S/he has responsibility to lead specific projects,
as well as to contribute to other team projects. More specifically
s/he will:
• Conduct research and analysis, using qualitative and quantitative
data as necessary
• Prepare and edit reports, briefing notes, correspondence,
presentations, and other documents
• Develop terms of reference for externally conducted research
studies, and oversee implementation
• Consult and engage with non-governmental organizations, community
groups, conservation authorities, universities, industry associations,
government staff, and other organizations
• Represent the Foundation on the Working Group of the Golden
Horseshoe Food and Farming Alliance to help ensure progress is made in
implementing a 10 year Action Plan
• Manage development and implementation of roundtable discussions,
workshops and other events
• Liaise with Foundation communications staff in the preparation of
news releases, informational backgrounders, and other supporting
materials
Qualifications
The successful applicant will have 3-5 years’ experience and the
following qualifications:
• Demonstrated research and analytical skills, including working
knowledge of qualitative research methodologies and quantitative
statistical techniques
• Effective written and oral communication skills
• Proven ability to interpret legislation and regulations
• Understanding of Ontario’s land use planning system, and working
knowledge of the Provincial Policy Statement, the Greenbelt Plan, the
Oak Ridges Conservation Plan, and/or the Niagara Escarpment Plan
• Background in ecology and natural systems management
• Interest in agriculture and food
• Track record of developing and maintaining relationships across
organizations and at different levels within organizations
• Well-developed organizational, work planning, and problem solving skills
• Demonstrated negotiation and conflict resolution skills
• Working computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
or similar presentation software
• Valid Ontario Drivers’ license
• Sense of humour
