Vibro-cholera
is a gram-negative bacterium that causes spectrums of infection ranging from asymptomatic
colonization to rapidly fatal secretory diarrhoea known a cholera gravis. V.

lipopolysaccharide; the vast majority of human cholera is caused by 01 and 0139
serogroups. The 01 serogroup of V. Cholera is subclassified into two biotype
(classical and E1 Tor) and two major serotypes.

Although the mechanism by which blood group
influence susceptibility to cholera is undefined but it was discovered that the
association between blood group O and protection from infection was serogroup
dependant while blood group O was associated with protection from infection
with V. Cholera 01, there was no such protection from infection on exposure to
V. Cholera 0139. However, the associations between blood group O and an
increased risk of developing severe diarrhoea symptoms, when infections were
similar for both serogroup of V. Cholera 01 analysis, by infecting serotype.
