ABO Blood Group and Malaria Parasite

Malaria
is an infection caused by protozoan parasite of the genus plasmodium and
transmitted by the bite of the infected anopheles mosquitoes; out the four
species that infect humans, plasmodium faciparium is the principle cause of
severe clinical manifestation (Tekoste and Pretose, 2010).

An association between ‘’O’’ blood group and lower
resetting capacity (an important component of several possible pathogenic
mechanism) has been demonstrated. However, resetting capacities of blood group
“A”, “B” or “AB” have remained controversial on the erythrocyte surface, the A
and B antigen are trisaccharides-A Gal NACα1-(FUCA-2) GaLiβi and B-Gal NACCAL-3
(Fucal-2) Galβ1 respectively, that are attached to different glycolipids and
glycoproteins. An enzyme glycotranferase is necessary for the production of A
and B antigens on the other hand; blood group “O” carries a disaccharide H
antigen (fucα1-2Galβ1) due to the absence of the enzyme glycotransferase (Daniels,
2005).
Variations in gene encoding functional
glucotransferase have been associated with protections from severe P.
Falciparium malaria
Tri-saccharide of “A” and “B” blood group is
presumed to act as receptors and functions as an important factor for resetting
(Barragen et al.,2000). However, RBCs
of blood group “O” do not express tri-saccharide and resetting formed by
infected “O” blood group RBCS are smaller and easily disrupted compared to
blood group A, B, or AB (Rowe et al.,2007).
Results of the current study suggest that patients
with non-O blood group have a fourfold increased risk of developing severe
infection. In addition it also reiterates the observation that “O” blood group
was significantly associated with a decreased risk of severe malaria (Loscertales
et al.,2007).
