Type: volunteer
Organization: Fresh Air Learning
Location: North Vancouver, British Columbia
What would happen if the forest and the garden was your school? At Fresh Air
Learning, children ages 3-12 connect with nat
ure through hands-on exploration
in these places. Fresh Air Learning is seeking volunteer interns for a one-term
learning opportunity. We also welcome those who want to volunteer for the year.
Join us in one of our outdoor programs for preschool-aged children or in our
new intermediate and primary programs for elementary school-aged homelearners.
Who You Are:
You want to explore, develop hands-on skills, and enjoy the outdoors with a
group of like-minded people, rain or shine. You’re interested in developing
your knowledge of local ecosystems, moving into the role of nature mentor as
you foster children’s love for the outdoors, and expanding your ability to work
in forest and farm settings.
What we offer:
• Training in forest school philosophy and teaching techniques
• Ongoing mentorship from our teachers
• A chance to experience forest, farm, and garden learning environments
• An opportunity to understand your own gifts as a mentor and facilitator
• A community of parents and children who love nature and will be delighted to
welcome you
What we are looking for:
• You can commit to being present in an assistant role one day or one morning
or afternoon a week working with a class from preschool to grade seven. Hours
range from 8:15-3:45 to a half-day from 9:15-12:15 or 12:45-3:45.
• You are interested in actively participating in group management, risk
assessment, conflict resolution, and facilitation. You may support one or more
children more intensively or work with the entire group.
• You are dedicated to the development of children’s curiosity and support
learning that is based in play, exploration, and inquiry. You seek to build on
children’s strengths and facilitate nonviolent communication.
• You are interested in developing your understanding of local ecosystems. You
have some knowledge of these ecosystems already, and you have a deep respect
for and engagement with nature.
• You are willing to submit a criminal record check. This is fairly simple to do
online.
Our programs run in North Vancouver and Vancouver (Pacific Spirit Park).
