VSO Medical Doctor Job Vacancy in Tanzania

Background

Mortality and
morbidity in Zanzibar continue to be dominated by preventable, communicable
diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, diarrhoea and cholera outbreaks.
However, conditions related to pregnancy and childbirth and respiratory
infections in young children contribute significantly to maternal mortality and
morbidity. This placement aims to support Vitongoji Cottage Hospital to
improve the health service provision to all patients making sure the clinical
treatment that they receive is of good technical quality. The volunteer will
ensure that systems and procedures for patient treatment and care are in place
and are observed by all work with the local hospital. The role will also
include implementation of community outreach on maternal and child health services.

What does
the role involve

  • Provide
    on the job training for staff
  • Organize
    and coordinate departmental meetings
  • Represent
    the department at management meetings
  • Participate
    in the ward management and review of special cases  
  • Communication
    and cooperation with ward staff 
  • Develop
    new protocols and procedures in the department
  • Provide
    consultancy for other departments

Skills,
qualifications and experience required

You can apply for
this role if you are a qualified medical doctor with at least two years work
experience in surgery. The volunteer must be a team worker with good social and
interpersonal skills and networking abilities and should be able to handle
conflicts in a constructive consultative way. Patience, tolerance and resilience
will be essential requirements for building mutual understanding with
colleagues. The volunteer must have the confidence and the ability to learn a
new language, Kiswahili, which will be vital in their dealings with patients
and in gaining the respect of their colleagues.

Tanzania is an east
African country with a tropical climate. This placement is based in Vitongoji
Cottage Hospital, one of two cottage hospitals in Pemba, an island 50kms east
of mainland Tanzania. There are shops and banks nearby and public transport
available along with internet facilities. While on placement, we’ll ask you to
commit to at least 12 months to make a sustainable contribution to our
development goals. In return, we’ll give you comprehensive financial, personal
and professional support. We’ll provide you with extensive training including
language classes before your placement, and our financial package includes a
local living allowance, return flights, accommodation, insurance and more. When
you return to your home country, we’ll support you to resettle.
