Level
3:  the post holder will have contact with children and/or young people
either frequently (e.g. once a week or more) or intensively (e.g. four days in
one month or more or overnight) because they work country programs; or are
visiting country programs; or because they are responsible for implementing the
police checking/vetting process staff.
ROLE
PURPOSE:
The
Child Protection Assistant is a member of Save the Children’s child protection
team, contributing to Save the Children’s protection activities in the Bugesera
or Nyanza reception centre for Burundian refugees, under the supervision of the
Child Protection Officer. S/he and is responsible for:
•            
Implementing child protection activities in Bugesera or Nyanza reception
centre.
•            
Working with volunteers to ensure that the activities are in line with child
protection minimum standards and programme objectives.
•            
Conducting Best Interests Assessments (BIAs) for new arrivals.
In
the event of a major humanitarian emergency, the role holder will be expected
to work outside the normal role profile and be able to vary working hours
accordingly.

KEY
AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:
Program
Planning and Implementation
•            
Plan and implement monthly and weekly activity plans to achieve expected
results.
•            
Ensure that all planned activities such as CFS operations, community awareness
raising, and case management are implemented on time and to quality standards.
Where challenges arise, ensure that these are flagged early, communicated to
the Child Protection Officer and addressed in an appropriate way.
Child
Protection
•            
Identify and document vulnerable children including separated and unaccompanied
minors, including the completion of Best Interests Assessments.
•            
Document the separated and unaccompanied children according to the standard
family tracing and reunification procedures and in line with Save the
Children’s child safeguarding policy.
•            
Conduct community awareness on identification of vulnerable children and the
process of registration of separated/unaccompanied children including family tracing.
•            
Conduct community consultation on temporary care arrangements of
separated/unaccompanied children.
•            
Refer cases with specific needs to the competent service providers, follow up
and document referred cases.
•            
Ensure that urgent and challenging cases are immediately discussed with direct
supervisors.
•            
Conduct follow-up visits on temporary care arrangements of cases and children
reunified with caregivers.
•            
Report any violation of the child safeguarding policy of Save the Children and
ensure that all staff and volunteers and aware of the policy and procedure, and
that they have signed all relevant documentation.
Staff

•            
Supervise and mentor volunteers and provide inductions for new volunteers.
Monitoring
and Reporting
•            
Collect and document all programme data regularly and accurately.
•            
Contribute to the preparation of internal and external reports.
•            
Inputs into weekly reports for the reception centre.
Collaboration
and Representation
•            
Collaborate with relevant agencies working in the reception centre.
•            
Work closely with Save the Children colleagues and participate in team work.

QUALIFICATIONS 
University
or college qualification in social science or in a relevant area or equivalent
work experience.
EXPERIENCE
AND SKILLS
Essential
•            
Minimum of 1 year relevant work experience in child protection or related
field.
•            
Proven technical knowledge and skills in the field of Child Protection.
•            
Proven ability to work as part of a team.
•            
Ability to identify the main gaps in child protection in the given context to
inform a holistic response for children.
•            
Politically and culturally sensitive with qualities of patience, tact, and
diplomacy.
•            
Strong organizational skills.
•            
A good level of written and spoken English/ Kirundi and Kinyarwanda.
•            
Good computer skills (MS Office, including Outlook for email).
•            
Commitment to and understanding of Child Rights and Save the Children’s
aims,  values  and principles including rights-based approaches
Desirable
•            
Experience working in humanitarian response
Additional

The
