The Fuel Cells and Solid State Chemistry Division” at Risø DTU (from January 2012 part of the new Department for Energy Conversion and Storage at DTU) is among the world’s research leaders in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) – a technology for clean and efficient conversion of chemical energy (in the form of, e.g., natural gas, hydrogen, biogas, ammonia or methanol) into electricity and heat. In addition we have activities within a number of related topics in functional ceramics, including high-temperature electrolysis, oxygen and
hydrogen separation membranes, electrochemical flue gas purification and magnetic refrigeration.
Job description
Functional ceramics are brittle materials. It is important for the success of the technology that components can withstand the mechanical loads they encounter during handling, stacking and operation. You will contribute to the development of mechanically robust SOFCs as well as other functional ceramic components. This is a challenging task as failure may occur both due to brittle fracture and high temperature creep. Furthermore, the component properties depend in a complex manner on a large number of processing parameters. To tackle this you will work with mathematical modelling of micro-structures and relate model results to experimental observations. Experimental work will involve room temperature as well as high temperature measurements of mechanical properties.
Qualifications
• PhD in engineering, materials science, physics, chemistry or similar
• strong background in solid mechanics
• preferably experience with one or more of the following areas:
o fracture mechanics
o mathematical modelling (solid mechanics or “multi-physics”)
o measurement of mechanical properties
o characterisation of ceramic materials
o ceramic processing
• ability to work independently, to plan and carry out complicated tasks, and to be a part of a large, dynamical group
• good communication skills in English, both written and spoken

Terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The salary will be agreed with the relevant union. The period of employment is 2 years. The place of work is DTU Risø Campus in Roskilde.
