Obstetrics and Gynaecology / OBGYN Program Manager Job Vacancy in Liberia

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the IRC offers lifesaving care and life-changing assistance to refugees forced to flee from war or disaster. At work today in
over 40 countries and 22 U.S. cities, we restore safety, dignity and hope to millions who are uprooted and struggling to endure. The IRC leads the way from harm to home.

BACKGROUND:
Liberia has among the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the world. Maternal mortality is estimated at 994 per 100,000 live births, while under-five mortality is estimated at 110 per 1000 live births. These high rates are attributable to a number of factors including limited access to comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care (EmONC) at critical times in the pregnancy period and birthing process.

To improve access to life serving emergency obstetric and neonatal care, the government of Liberia has established specialized EmONC centres in several counties across the country. One EmONC site is at Curran Hospital in Zorzor, Lofa County. Curran is a private secondary care facility which recently reached an agreement with the Liberian Ministry of Health and the Ruilding Basic Health Services Program to provide free access to quality EmONC services. The Hospital performs about 30 emergency C-sections a month and has one staff doctor, two mid-wives, one physician assistnant and two nurses.

The IRC is seeking a qualified clinician to fill the position of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Program Manager to be based at Curran Hospital to provide excellent medical care, to train Liberian medical staff, to organize the obstetric and gynecological wards and to expand Curran Hospital’s current care to include pregnancy prevention and patient social support.
