Introductory Concept to Drug Abuse

All
over the world a large number of people engaged in the chewing, swallowing,
smoking, snuffing and also injection drugs to prevent or cure disease.
Most
often these drugs are taken without prescription and this create a good forum form
misuse and abuse of drug either consciously or unconsciously. The type of drugs
that is used or abuses are alcohol, cigarette, Indian hemp, colanut, coffee,
slimming pills and sleeping pills. Udoh (1977).

Bozino
(1978) said ‘‘A drug includes a substance of vegetable, animals of material
origin or any preparation or as mixture therefore which is used for internal or
external application to the human body in the treatment of disease.
Ajala
(1992) stated that drug is a serious problem found in many areas, misuse and
abuse of psychoactive substance as well as their associated health and
socio-economic consequences, continue to be major source of concern for
societies in both developed and less developed countries.  
Udoh
(1977) defines drug abuse as the persistence, excessive and improper use of
drug without regard to accepted medical practice.
One
cannot talk about drugs and health of the youth without referring to the
problem or drug abuse in our society. Improper use of drugs is referred to as a
drug abuse’. A drug may be said to be abused when more or more of the following
conditions are met. According to National Drug and Law Enforcement Agency
(NDLEA) (1992).
1.     
The
drug is self-administrated rather than being administered under medical supervision.
2.     
The
use of drug may harm the individual or society or both.
It
is known that dangerous drugs are easily available to member of the public; you
can enter a chemist shop and buy antibodies.
