is offering PhD positions for international students  in the field of
Population Genetics. Highly motivated and outstanding students with a
background in bioinformatics, statistics, evolutionary genetics, functional
genetics, theoretical or experimental population genetics are eligible to apply
for this position. Applicants will be receive salary of
EUR 34.700,00 before tax according to the regulations of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).

Eligibility: We invite
applications from highly motivated and outstanding students with a background
in either theoretical, computational or experimental fields such
as bioinformatics, statistics, evolutionary genetics, functional genetics,
theoretical and experimental population genetics. Students from related
disciplines, such as physics or mathematics are also welcome to apply.

Scholarship Description: Over the past years, Vienna has developed into one of the leading
centres of population genetics. The Vienna Graduate School of Population
Genetics has been founded to provide a training opportunity for PhD students to
build on this excellent on site expertise.
Topics include:

Analysing next generation sequencing data and understanding the sampling properties of high throughput technologies.

The 1001 Genomes Project: Population genetics of Arabidopsis thaliana.

Speciation genetics in European columbines (Aquilegia).
• Mutagenesis in the germline with age.
• Population genetic inference using Pool-Seq data.
• Evolution of gene expression in Drosophila.

Speciation genomics: mapping of hybrid incompatibilities.
• Inference of selection from time series data.

Understanding the ecology and genetics of an adaptive trait in Drosophila embryos.
• Mathematical models of spatially varying selection in subdivided populations.

Statistical methods for detecting selective sweeps using genome-wide data.

The footprint of adaptive gene introgression after secondary contact.
• Probabilistic models for the population genetics of molecular evolution.

Inferring selection using Drosophila whole genome sequence data.
What does it cover? The yearly salary of successful
candidates is based on EUR 34.700,00 before tax according to the regulations of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).
Selection criteria: Candidates who fulfills all the eligibility criteria and other
asked requirements will be shortlisted for
the interview round. For the third level  the applicants
will have the opportunity to interact with current students. Furthermore,
the applicants are given the opportunity to interact with the prospective
thesis advisor to discuss specific aspects of the project. The final decision
is made by the faculty, aiming to recruit the candidates with the highest
scientific potential
