Ascaris lumbricodes

   Ascaris
lumbricoides is a giant (up to 300mm) long intestinal roundworm that probably
account for the greatest number of worm infestations. It is particularly common
among children who play with sand and get their fingers contaminated with the
egg (ova) they possess the following characteristic.

They are yellowish-white in colour but pin-white
(freshly expelled)

They are found in the small intestine
*     
Worms develop without an intermediate host
*     
Eggs can strive in warm moist soils and resist
cold and chemical disinfectants.
*     
They are also sensitive to sunlight, high
temperature.
*     
Mouth has three lips and the oesophagus is
muscular and without a posterior bulb. Male has spicules and tail is curved
ventrally.
*     
Adult male measures 15 – 30cm long and 2 – 4 mm
wide while female measures 20 – 35cm
*     
They 
elongated cylindrical in shape
*     
Sexes are in separate (male & female organs)
*     
Body is covered with a cuticle, which may have
ridges, striation or wart like structure.
*     
Possess digestion nervous and reproductive
system.
*     
Spends larva and adult stages in humans and
release embryonic eggs in feaces.
Mode of transmission
The disease is spread to man through the
ingestion of food, drinks or soiled objects
Geographical distribution: It occur all around the
world.
Life cycle 
   They
undergo direct life cycle. After the eggs are ingested, they hatch the
intestine into larva, the larva migrate through the wells of the intestine into
the hepatic portal system to the liver and are carried by blood stream into the
right ventricle of the heart, and eventually arrive at the capillaries of the
lungs. Form this points, the larva migrate up the bronchi and trachea to
pharynxfring wherte it is coughen up and swallowed and returned to the stay for
6 – 8 wks to mature into adult worms amd lay up to 200,000 fertilized eggs a
day that are passed in faeces.
The adults, male and female
worms not attached to the liver, gallbladder and occasionally the worms emerge
from the mouth which can result to server inflammatory reactions in the
migratory route.
