A nature-focused educational environment and activity hub for both students
with complex disabilities and the greater community, the Aptus Teaching
Landscape in North York is an enhanced learning green space that will include a
fruit orchard, edible garden and mini-arboretum. Through the Weston Family
Parks Challenge, education and stewardship opportunities will engage students
and local residents in environmental programs as well as complement the City’s
recreational improvements to an adjacent park.

Program Supervisor, Aptus Teaching Landscape(02 Year Contract)

The Aptus Teaching Landscape is a 1.3 acre multi-environment learning space on
land connecting Aptus Treatment Centre’s Children’s Day Program in Toronto to
the Anthony Road Park. Aptus Treatment Centre supports children, teens and
adults with complex disabilities. The Program Manager is responsible for
heading community programs and managing the year-round planting schedule and
maintenance of the Aptus Teaching Landscape, in conjunction with the Children’s
Day Program’s Program Manager, Environmental Educators, Maintenance staff,
Community Outreach Staff and Community Volunteers.

This position complies with Aptus’ Policies and Procedures, follows Aptus’
Mission, Vision and Values. This position will work in compliance with the provisions
of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, and with the
Ministry of Community and Social Services.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Responsible for development of community programs for a diverse community.
Programming to include: how to create edible ecosystems, certificate programs
in tree pruning, year-round experiential learning in the greenhouse and/or
garden, seasonal events with the harvest, and bi-weekly movie nights over the
summer.
• Responsible to co-lead with the School’s Program Manager, teachers and
Environmental Educators: curriculum-based programming, summer camp programs,
seasonal weekly farmers markets, monthly art markets and workshops, nature
walks with learning stations.
• Create and manage outdoor classroom maintenance plan and year-round outdoor
and greenhouse planting schedule, with duties identified for the School’s
Educators and their classes; community volunteers; and Maintenance Staff.
• Contribute to proposals to attract funding for the Aptus Teaching Landscape,
in partnership with the Fundraising & P.R. Department. Oversee program
deliverables for programming grants.
• Managing community and after-school volunteers throughout the year.
• Participate in certificate tree pruning program to build Aptus Teaching
Landscape program.
• Conduct annual analysis of similar programs and make recommendations to
improve the project’s design, function and approach in subsequent years.
• Develop, oversee and track programming budget.
• Work collaboratively with the Fundraising and P.R. Department to create copy
for brochures, flyers, learning station signs, web text, press releases and
social media.
• Liaise with community agencies, volunteers, user groups, agencies and the
public.
• Responsible to create and maintain partnerships with community organizations
and other professionals to enhance Aptus Teaching Landscape’s recreational and
community outreach offerings.
• Assist in event planning and implementation for community garden celebrations
including overseeing the school’s Training Kitchen for preparation of seasonal
dinners or cooking events.
• Coordinate and manage bookings of the Aptus Teaching Landscape’s community
event space.
• Works independently and also as a member of a team.
• Exhibits a thorough knowledge of the department’s policies and procedures,
Employment Standards.
• Performs other related tasks and duties as assigned by the Executive Director

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform the job successfully, the incumbent must be able to perform each
essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative
of the knowledge, skills and/or ability required.
• Minimum two years teaching experience in Horticulture and/or
environmental/outdoor education.
• Post-secondary education in a related field or equivalent.
• 2 years of horticultural experience.
• Experience in managing a garden with organic vegetable production preferred.
• Ontario teaching certificate is an asset or equivalent curriculum experience.
• Experience and ease working with diverse ethnic and socioeconomic
communities.
• Health & Safety Certification an asset.
• Strong interpersonal and communications skills with both adults and child
audiences.
• Experience working with and/or managing volunteers in a not-for-profit
setting.
• Creativity and Problem Solving skills, energy and enthusiasm.
• Experience maximizing social media for program promotion.
• Current and valid driver’s license with access to a car, preferred.
• Vulnerable Sector Screening Check required prior to work commencement.

Salary: $ 50,000 per annum + 4% Vacation Pay
