BACKGROUND
The Peace Corps is
an independent U.S. Government agency that sends American volunteers around the
world to aid countries to fulfill their development needs.
Peace Corps
originally opened its program in Rwanda in 1974, working for 20 years before
closing its offices in 1994. It reopened its program in 2008 and Peace Corps
Volunteers are currently working in two sectors (Education and Health). We are
seeking enthusiastic individuals who are team players and self-starters with
professional integrity to fill these vacancies.
Period of Performance: June 1st, – December 20th, 2013
BASIC FUNCTION
The Language and
Cross Culture Facilitator (LCF) instructs Peace Corps Trainees and Volunteers
in Kinyarwanda language under the direction of the Language and Cross Cultural
Coordinator. Advises and teaches trainees on cross-cultural items and issues.
Conducts classes in Kinyarwanda using the techniques, methods and training
materials provided by Peace Corps Rwanda. Assigns lessons, corrects faulty
pronunciation, improper tone pattern, and faulty structure by using intensive
drills of various kinds. Works closely with the Language and Cross Cultural
Coordinator (LCC) to periodically schedule students for tests and advises LCC
on a regular basis of the progress of students and suggests transfer of
students to other classes when necessary. Collaborates with Host Family members
in order to help Trainees practice their Kinyarwanda in the family and in the
host community.
Language Training:
Actively
participates in a Training of Trainers workshop. Assists the Language and Cross
Cultural Coordinator with preparation of lesson plans (writing new lesson plans
as needed and improving on previous ones). Prepares all relevant learning
materials, charts, supplies, etc. Submits an oral or written report after each
teaching session. Assists Trainees at all times during the training and acts as
a cultural information resource. Attends technical sessions to best incorporate
relevant terms into lesson plans. Assists colleagues with lesson preparation
before classes. Provides objective feedback on Trainee progress to LCC and
Training Manager (TM).
Integrates
technical, cross culture and other content-related vocabulary into daily
Kinyarwanda teaching.
Host Family Monitoring
Under the
coordination of the Host Family Coordinator and Training Manager and with the
collaboration of other language trainers, LCF participates in regular visits
and evaluations of the Trainee’s stay with a local Host Family.
Discusses Trainee’s
cultural, health and/or safety issues with the Host Family and reports directly
to the LCC/TM. Communicates all logistical and program concerns, questions,
problems and/or recommendations to the Training Manager.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge:
Knowledge and experience in second language training methods and systems.
Excellent knowledge of Kinyarwandan, grammar, idiom, syntax, and pronunciation.
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree with adult teaching experience.
Prior Work Experience:
One to three years experience in positions requiring the application of
language and cross-cultural instructional skills and techniques and effective
communication with students/trainees to gain and hold their interest.
Experience in adult and experiential learning is a plus.
Language Proficiency:
Fluent English and Kinyarwanda (written and spoken)
Abilities and Skills
Ability to communicate effectively in order to retain trainee’s interest
and motivation, and to assist them in developing their language ability
rapidly. Presents her/himself in a professional manner displaying confidence
and knowledge of areas of responsibility. Good interpersonal skills and
awareness of cross-cultural issues are important to the position. The candidate
will demonstrate commitment to the program and ability to work well in a team.
Possessing a current PC background security clearance is desirable. Please
