Job purpose

The Great Garden Adventure (GGA) Coordinator will assist in the implementation
of the GGA program and ensuring the safety and enjoyment of all program
participants. The incumbent will be responsible for planning and facilitating
garden and nature-related eco-activities for children, the supervision of
volunteers, and helping to maintain and develop partnerships with partnering
community organizations. This position reports to the TGC Program Manager. The
Great Garden Adventure (GGA) Program is intended to develop the knowledge and
enjoyment of nature and urban gardening to children through fun lessons, games,
crafts and activities that highlight ecosystems. The GGA program is held at various
locations with a focus on Neighbourhood Improvement Areas across Toronto.

Please note that this is a Canada Summer Jobs position funded by ESDC for a
duration of 8 weeks.

Duties and responsibilities

The Great Garden Adventure Coordinator will be assigned the following
responsibilities:
• coordinate, plan and deliver daily garden and nature-related programming for
children aged 3 to 10 years through games, crafts, and other activities
• liaise and work alongside staff and volunteers from existing community
partners at all locations
• collect and report on feedback from participants/clients
• manage program supplies within program budget and track attendance
• develop new program activities to be adapted to varying age groups
• communicate with community garden coordinators regarding shared space and
needs
• attend regular meetings with the Program Manager and provide feedback,
including immediate reporting of arising issues or problems
• prepare and submit a final summary report with recommendations for future
planning

Qualifications

The candidate must have one or more of the following:
• Experience working with children/youth (Teaching experience an asset)
• Passionate about environmental education
• An interest in and/or knowledge of gardening and ecosystems
• Arts and crafts skills an asset
• Excellent public speaking, communication and interpersonal skills
• Strong organizational, planning and time management skills
• Ability to work independently and as a team member
• Responsible, reliable, keen self-starter
• Positive attitude and enjoys working with members of diverse communities
• Provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Security Check conducted by Toronto
Police Services

Eligibility Conditions: This position is funded by Employment and Skills
Development Canada’s Canada Summer Jobs program.

Applicants must:
• be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
• have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year
• have been a full-time student in the 2015-2016 academic year
• be returning to full-time studies in 2016-2017
• be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or have official refugee
protection status under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
• be legally entitled to work in Canada, according to relevant Province of
Ontario legislation and regulations Compensation
• $ 11.25/hour for 30 hours a week

Working conditions

The successful candidate must arrange for their own travel to different
locations within the City of Toronto and must be willing to work within the
hours of 9am-7pm from Monday to Friday, with some evenings and weekends.

Physical requirements
• Frequent walking and standing
• Spend extended periods outdoors
• Position may require to lift up to 20 pounds
