In this 10 week, full-time, experience-rich, career-path summer
position, the Stewardship Assistant (SA) assists to steward natural
areas in Riverwood. Under the supervision of the Stewardship
Coordinator, the SA supports the Stewardship Pro
gram and Volunteer
Program, and when needed, the Gardens Program. The SA schedules,
supervises and leads volunteer secondary school students in
stewardship activities to fulfill their 40-hour community service.
Position responsibilities
The SA assists to preserve the Riverwood environment under the
mentorship and supervision of the Stewardship Coordinator, and leads
and supervises secondary students to:
• revitalize degraded areas to improve and protect its ecology,
habitat and wildlife (plant and animal) bio-diversity;
• manage populations of invasive plants; perform plant inventory and mapping;
• maintain and monitor public trails; report safety issues;
• maintain and monitor bird feeders and nesting boxes;
• plant native trees, shrubs and perennials, perform field monitoring;
• support volunteer groups performing stewardship restoration activities;
• keep the grounds tidy and litter-free
The SA supports the Volunteer Program to:
• organize, schedule, track hours, supervise and lead secondary students;
• work with community organizations in stewardship activities and
volunteers of different ages, abilities, and assist special events as
needed;
The SA supports the public education program Discovery@Riverwood and
special events
Skills and qualifications
• Enrolled full-time in a college or university, with emphasis in
ecology, environmental science, biology, botany, geology or related
science, and must plan to return to full-time studies the next
academic year;
• Hands-on stewardship experience and ability to identify flora and
fauna are assets;
• Sense of humour and excellent communication, organizational and
multi-tasking skills; demonstrated leadership skills;
• Ability to work safely as a team and independently with minimal supervision;
• Ability to work with and lead volunteers of diverse backgrounds;
• Appreciation of the environment and out-of-doors work;
• A valid Police check, or the ability to acquire one;
• Experience in ArcGIS and GPS use is an asset;
• Some computer skills are an asset;
• Training in emergency first aid and CPR is an asset, or training
will be provided;
• Valid class “G” drivers license is an asset;
• The wage is $12.00 per hour; workweek runs Monday to Friday; the
position is funded through a Service Canada/Canada Summer Jobs 2015
grant;
