Position Summary:
The goal of Sierra Club BC’s Education Program is to develop a
population that is aware of, concerned about, and connected with the
environment.
We are currently seeking one Education Program Coordinator to join our
Education Team on a part-time (30 hrs/wk) basis. The goal of this
position is to ensure smooth operation of all curriculum-linked
environmental education programming in elementary and middle school
classrooms throughout British Columbia. They are responsible for
training and supervising professional educators, scheduling
provincewide classroom visits, and performing all required
administrative tasks. The Education Program Coordinator maintains
strong relationships with teachers, responds to queries, and
implements a strong communications strategy for the classroom
programs. This position also requires the ability to lead
environmental/sustainability professional development workshops for
teachers, and the capability to lead classroom programs for grades
K-8. General administrative tasks for the entire education department
are also required.
Position Overview:
The successful candidate will ensure smooth and successful delivery of
school-based programming by the following:
GENERAL/ ADMINISTRATIVE
• Ensure smooth booking and scheduling of school programs with
teachers and school programs staff
• Plan trip logistics for school-based programs outside the CRD
• Responsible for the development and delivery of teacher training
workshops, either by scheduling appropriate educators or delivering
workshops independently
• Assist management in project administration, reporting, and evaluation
• Respond to telephone calls / emails related to school-based programming
• Represent the Education Program at key Teacher Pro-D trainings,
events, and meetings
• Maintain files, paperwork and associated records in an organized and
transparent fashion
• Maintain and oversee the overall Education Program database
(school-based program contacts, K-8 contacts, youth programming
contacts)
• Work closely with a team of educators as part of Sierra Club’s
Environmental Education Team.
STAFF SUPERVISION
• Responsible for the hiring and training of new Environmental Educators
• Supervise and monitor performance of Environmental Educators
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
• Develop, maintain, and work within K-8 programming budgets
• Maintain, coordinate, and report on school-based donations
• Maintain lead role for donations relating to the wider Education
Program as a whole (youth programming, etc)
• Track all expenses and submit expenses on a monthly basis to the
Finance department
FUNDRAISING
• Assist with the submission of funding proposals (LOI’s,
applications) and reporting out of achievements for school-based
programs, and Education Department as a whole
COMMUNICATIONS
• Assist with the distribution of program promotional/marketing materials
• Responsible for the design, writing, and distribution of our monthly
Education eNews, and all program-associated web-uploads.
CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT
• Update and revise school-based programs to directly link to current
provincial curriculum and Prescribed Learning Outcomes
• Update and revise downloadable lesson plans and curriculum-linked resources
• Source appropriate printing, distribution, and in-servicing of new
learning resources
In addition to being creative, professional, and incredibly
knowledgeable of environmental education in BC, you must enjoy working
with children, youth, and adults.
Qualifications:
• A university degree in Education or Environmental Studies, or other
relevant field/ proven life experience of equivalent nature. Masters
degree desirable
• A minimum of three years demonstrable experience within
environmental education, outdoor education, youth engagement, and/or
experiential education
• A minimum of three years experience in program coordination
• Ability to supervise staff, delegate tasks, and monitor workplans
• Demonstrable experience working in a formal classroom environment,
with an understanding of environmental education at the
regional/provincial/national level, BC’s Ministry of Education
Integrated Learning Resource Packages, and provincial school system
operating procedures
• Strong knowledge of BC’s provincial curriculum for grades K-8
• Knowledge and understanding of environmental, social justice, and
cultural concepts (preferably within the context of BC)
• Proven knowledge and proficiency in the areas of: curriculum
development, communications, project management, interpretation
(natural history/heritage), ethnobotany and/or environmental advocacy
in BC preferred
• Able to independently lead group presentations and activities, with
extensive experience working with students from diverse backgrounds
• Must be extremely well organized, able to multi-task and prioritize,
flexible to changing work schedules, and meet deadlines
• Excellent English language written and verbal communications skills,
and phenomenal people skills, particularly about environmental issues
• Creative, self-confident, highly motivated, with great leadership
and problem-solving skills
• Available for occasional evening, weekend, and out-of-town events
• Computer skills and a Class 5 Driver’s license required
• Wilderness First Aid Certification (minimum 40 hours) preferred
• Fluency in French an asset
Contract Duration: on-going
Compensation: $20.72/hour, 30 hours/week
