Position Summary:
The goal of Sierra Club BC’s Education Program is to develop a
population that is aware of, concerned about, and connected with the
environment.
We are currently seeking one Environmental Educator to join our
Education Team on a fulltime (37.5 hrs/wk) contract from September
2014 until June 2015. The goal of this position is to deliver our
schools-based environmental education programs in elementary and
middle school classrooms throughout British Columbia. Programs are
themed around the following topics:
• Going Wild!: This program is centred around wild product harvesting,
Aboriginal and cultural knowledge
of BC’s forest products, and sustainable economies. It is based on our
learning guide for grades 4-7. Two
programs: K-3 and 4-7.
• Nature and Climate: This program focuses on the link between climate
changes and BC’s natural
ecosystems, particularly forest. Two programs: K-3 and 4-7.
• Teacher Training Workshops: Professional development workshops for
teachers include our Going Wild!
guidebook and associated activities, teaching sustainability within
the current BC curriculum, sustainable
seafood, and other environmental topics.
Position Overview:
• Developing program outlines and activities for Nature and Climate
Program (grades K-3, and grades 4-8).
• Delivering interpretive school programs in classrooms throughout BC.
Travel may be a significant component of this position.
• Assisting with curriculum revisions and updating information and
activities for all elementary and middle school programs.
• Supporting the development and delivery of teacher training workshops.
• Responsible for program scheduling within the CRD, teacher
communications, program outreach, preparation of pre-program
presentation materials, and general logistics for program delivery.
• Creating new program props and print materials.
• Assist Education Program Coordinator and Manager in project
administration, reporting, and evaluation
• Liaising with other Environmental NGOs, Education Service Providers,
and First Nations community groups to further the program’s mandate.
• Represent Sierra Club BC’s Education Program at professional
development workshops and events as required.
• Working closely with a team of educators as part of Sierra Club’s
Environmental Education Team.

and having excellent communication skills, you must enjoy working with
a team and with children.

Qualifications:
• A minimum of 2 years demonstrated experience Environmental Education.
• Relevant degree/diploma (environmental science, natural sciences,
anthropology, education, or other related fields).
• Able to independently lead group presentations and activities, with
extensive experience working with children, preferably with First
Nations youth.
• Experience working in First Nations communities, with an
appreciation for cultural differences.
• Comprehensive knowledge of BC’s ecosystems, traditional ecological
knowledge, sustainability initiatives, and environmental education
approaches.
• Strong knowledge of plant identification; ethnobotany experience is
preferred.
• Demonstrable experience teaching/communicating climate science to
groups of people.
• Strong knowledge of provincial school curriculum and working in a
classroom environment; BC knowledge is preferred.
• Must be extremely well organized, able to prioritize tasks, flexible
to changing work schedules, and meet deadlines.
• Excellent English language written and verbal communications skills,
and phenomenal people skills, particularly about environmental issues.
• Creative, self-confident, highly motivated, with great leadership
and problem-solving skills.
• Available for some evening, weekend, and out-of-town events.
• Computer skills and a Class 5 Driver’s license.
• Fluency in French and Wilderness First Aid (minimum 40 hours) an asset.
Contract Duration: September 2014 – June 2015.
Compensation: $16.91/hour
