PIH
has worked in Rwanda since 2005, and today serves a catchment area of 800,000
through 37 health centers and three hospitals in partnership with its sister
organization, Inshuti Mu Buzima (IMB). Over the past nine years the MOH-PIH
partnership has attempted to build a rural health care system that extends through
all levels of care and encompasses a wide range of clinical services, programs
addressing social determinants of health, training and research.
Background
Information
The
IMB Department of Mentorship, Education and Training (DMET) provides training
for health care workers on all levels (pre-service and in-service) with a
particular emphasis on social and community medicine and social determinants of
health in rural and marginalized communities. Together with the Discipline of
Primary Health Care, School of Medicine and Pharmacy, College of Medicine and
Health Sciences, at the University of Rwanda (CMHS-UR), IMB has developed an
undergraduate social and community medicine training for medical student
trainees to introduce them to the social determinants of health and the
importance of community-based health care. As the School of Medicine and
Pharmacy has integrated social and community medicine training into all
pre-clinical and clinical years of training during the curriculum review in
2014, a more robust program to mentor and train the future generation of
medical doctors is underway.
Social
and Community Medicine Training Director
In
close partnership the Social and Community Medicine Training Director will be
responsible for the delivery and development of all aspects of the social and
community medicine training from CMHS-UR that are taking place at IMB sites.
This person will work in close collaboration with, and as an advisor to the
head of Discipline of Primary Health Care, CMHS-UR. The Social and Community
Medicine Training Director will supervise all training and research activities
related to social and community medicine training at the IMB sites and support
social and community medicine training and research at other CMHS-UR sites as
needed.
General
Responsibilities
  • Support
    and advise the head of Discipline of Primary Health Care, University of
    Rwanda in the supervision of the SOCOMED training taking place in IMB
    sites as well as providing support to other University-led social and
    community medicine training programs, as needed.
  • Supervise
    the Social and Community Medicine Training Manager, overseeing and
    advising on all activities related to the Social and Community Medicine
    Training
  • Create
    a safe learning environment for medical students during their training to
    develop themselves into patient-centered and community-oriented medical
    doctors
  • Collaborate
    with the University of Rwanda, College of Medicine and Health Sciences,
    School of Medicine and Pharmacy to oversee medical students rotations in
    Rwinkwavu and Kirehe District hospitals catchment areas, including
    teaching, assessment, and submission of semester progress report
  • Foster
    a strong partnership between Partners In Health and the University of
    Rwanda, work closely with Partners In Health, PIH-supported health
    facilities, and the School of Medicine and Pharmacy to ensure integration
    of students training into the existing health care system
  • Mentor
    students during their thesis research in the field of social and community
    medicine
  • Promote
    and integrate visiting international medical students, residents and
    clinicians into the social and community medicine training
  • Support
    collaboration with university faculty and IMB teams to develop curricula,
    educational materials, and teaching pedagogy for students, residents, and
    other clinicians
  • Collaborate
    with the IMB Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Department to ensure
    appropriate monitoring and evaluation of program (including pre- and
    post-test administration and data collection)
  • Work
    closely with IMB program leaders to ensure integration of training with
    ongoing IMB program goals and objectives
  • Supervise
    management of the budget and expenses for Social and Community Medicine
    Training logistics
  • Develop
    research proposals, preform research and disseminate findings in the field
    of social and community medicine training
  • Expand
    the social and community medicine training program, including development
    of new training sites
  • Develop
    and maintain a medical library at Rwinkwavu Training Centre as a resource
    for trainees
  • Collaborate
    with other PIH sites globally in strengthening the organization in
    developing social and community medicine education cross-site
  • Collaborate
    with colleague institutions in establishing a global social medicine
    consortium
Requirements:
  • Master’s
    Degree in Medicine, Public Health, Nursing, Social Work, Clinical
    Psychology, Sociology, or other health-related field. PhD or extensive
    research experience in health professions education and/or social medicine
    is preferred
  • At
    least 3 years post-graduate work experience in a resource-poor health
    system in a rural setting
  • At
    least 2 years professional experience in training and education, with
    knowledge and experience in adult learning methodology
  • Strong
    communication skills, administrative skills, organizational skills, and
    proven leadership capability
  • Demonstrated
    knowledge and experience in the study of social and community medicine and
    improving health care for the communities
  • Ability
    to respectfully interact with diverse audiences – colleagues, community
    members, students and other key people
  • Fluency
    in English, proficiency in French and Kinyarwanda is preferred
  • Commitment
    to health as a human right and social justice
