Training Health Researchers into Vocational Excellence in East Africa (THRIVE)
is a five years Wellcome Trust-funded consortium dedicated to build research
capacity among partnerships institutions in Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Kenya
with the partnership of London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and
Cambridge University. The consortium objectives are to: i) develop and sustain
a functioning consortium, ii) to empower institutions to build a critical mass
of well trained research scientists, iii) to augment the development of a
conducive institutional environment for high quality research, iv) to support
systems for improved governance and management of research activities.
The National University of Rwanda School of Public Health has been granted two
researcher/academic positions. The positions will be based at School of Public
Health in Kigali, Rwanda.
Job description
Under the supervision of the National University of Rwanda Academic Affairs
Deputy Director in Charge of Academic Affairs, the researcher/academic staff
shall fulfil the following tasks:
• Reviewing and teaching research methods and biostatistics courses to Master
students at NURSPH and at the Faculty of Medicine.
• Teaching research methods in quantitative research skills needed for both
clinical and population-based research on specific subjects such as
epidemiology and biostatistics to postgraduates students
• Provision of research mentorship for the school’s Masters students both
• Facilitating learning and carrying out research activities in NUR
• Providing fieldwork supervision for Masters students
• designing, preparing and developing teaching materials including modules
development and / or adaptation for research methods course per the NUR quality
framework
• Assessing students´ coursework
• Setting and marking examinations;
• Undertaking personal research projects and actively contributing to the
institution’s research
• contribute in writing up research and preparing it for publication;
• Supervising students’ research activities especially for statistical
analysis aspects;
• Screening of research proposals (methodology: sample size, statistical tests
etc) submitted by faculty to NURSPH´s IRB.
• Undertaking continuing professional development (CPD) and participating in
staff training activities for NURSPH and Faculty of Medicine
• establishing collaborative links outside the university with professional
organizations
• Any other task as may be assigned by the supervisor.
Required core competencies
• MSc. holders in Epidemiology and Biostatistics/ Public Health
• Three years experience in higher learning or relevant research institutions
• Advanced skills in Biostatistics, Research Methodology and Data Management.
• Ability to design data entry templates, process data entry, cleaning and
analysis.
• Ability to build, work in a team and getting the job done with high
performance
• Working effectively within time constraints
• Have grant writing experience
• Fluent in both spoken and written English, knowledge of French will be an
added advantage.
Deadlines
1. Application deadline: The completed application must be received by the
National University of Rwanda/ School of Public Health secretariat by 17th June
2013.
A Short list will be released and eligible candidates will be notified.
