Position(s) Descriptions: Farm Coordinator – TF
Wage: $18-20 hour
Hours: 35 per week
Contract: March-November 2016 – possible extension
The TFN Farm School and Incubator is a 9 month practical learning program in
Sustainable Agriculture. The teaching farm is set on 20 acres of Tsawwassen
First Nation land. It boasts a mixed orchard, 2 greenhouses, and livestock
including chickens, ducks, pigs and bees, a market garden and incubator plots
for program alumni. We operate a 3 acre organic market garden, a CSA and attend
Farmer’s Markets in Metro Vancouver.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced farmer to join our team. As
the Farm Coordinator, you will oversee a lot of the planning and execution
around the market garden and coordinate work parties with students, interns and
volunteers on the farm. You will work as a team with the Farm manager, Farm
School staff and teachers.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Crop planning
• Record keeping
• Coordination and mentoring of student’s practicum
• Soil preparation
• Integrated pest management
• Tractor work
• Planting cover crops
• Starting seedlings
• Managing greenhouse crops
• Coordination of the farms operations with the TFN Farm School program of
instruction
• Equipment and machinery care and maintenance
• Interface and provide technical support for incubator farmers (in conjunction
with the farm manager and teachers)
• Prepare produce orders or CSA boxes (wash, sort, package)
• Attend farmer’s markets
• Participate in building small farm structures
• Provide care for the farm animals
• Ensure that the farm is abiding by organic standards (research best practices
and keep records!)
Qualifications
• Alignment with the Institute of Sustainable Food Systems and TFN Farm
School’s missions and objectives
• Demonstrated market and fruit crop farming experience and skills
• Knowledge of and experience operating small scale farming tools and equipment
as well as tractors
• Ability to work with a diversity of people and with the Tsawwassen First
Nation community particularly
• Excellent organizational skills
• A love of farming and a passion for sharing your knowledge with others
• Strong written and verbal communication and networking skills
• Experience or willingness to learn about organic standards and practices in
BC
• Robust understanding of contemporary agricultural issues, sustainable and
organic agricultural practices and techniques, local agricultural and food security
issues and organizations
• Must be able to work independently Computer proficiency
• Experience with social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
• Positive, professional and collaborative attitude as well as a desire to be
involved in adult educational programming
• Valid drivers license
• Be in good physical condition. Can you lift a 50lbs bag?
• Be able to start working by the end of March at the latest
