The Indigenous Education
Foundation of Tanzania (IEFT) is looking for an energetic, independent
volunteer to teach Geography classes at a rural secondary school in Tanzania.

organization that provides quality, affordable s
econdary education to
under-served indigenous children in rural Tanzania. IEFT empowers children to
positively transform their own lives, and improve their communities. IEFT
operates the Orkeeswa School, a secondary school populated by motivated
students and a welcoming and dedicated team of international volunteers and

Job Description:
As the Geography teacher you will
be expected to instruct secondary school students within an exam-based system,
while also maintaining high standards of experiential, hands-on instruction.
You will be part of a math/science department responsible for other
non-classroom duties as needed. Specifically, you will be expected to:
- Teach Geography classes according to the Tanzanian
syllabus and requirements for EFL students in Forms 1-6. - Provide tutoring and extra help sessions for students
before, during or after school. - Assist with the organization, implementation and
execution of relevant Geography field trips and projects.
The Geography Teacher must have
the ability to build and maintain relationships with a diverse group of people,
be effective and flexible under pressure, and represent IEFT, its mission and
initiatives. It is a position in which you can use your creativity and develop
your skills while gaining experience with an emerging grassroots program. It is
very important that you are able to work independently and take initiative and
ownership, as well collaborate as a strong team member.
In addition to the
responsibilities of the position, it is important that you have the willingness
and ability to be flexible and to cope with challenging living and working
conditions in a developing country. Applicants must be able to live and work
with little or no running water, unreliable electricity and a lack of Western
amenities.
Qualifications:
- Hold a relevant bachelor’s degree and Geography teaching
qualification - Have experience teaching Geography at the secondary
school level, preferably with experience in an EFL classroom - A minimum one-year commitment, starting as soon as
possible is preferred.

Many volunteers and staff choose to spend their free time exploring some of
East Africa’s treasures, including safaris on the Serengeti Plain, climbing Mt.
Kilimanjaro, hiking the Ngorongoro Crater, or relaxing on the beaches of
Zanzibar Island. Experience Tanzania’s diverse indigenous cultures and
traditions, distinct wildlife and breathtaking scenery!
There is no program fee to
volunteer with IEFT, however candidates are required to cover their own
expenses to get to Tanzania and while living in Tanzania, including round-trip
airfare, the required Visa and processing fees ($1100 USD) and regular living
expenses (food, travel, etc.). Volunteers that commit to at least one year are
eligible for our stipend program; please inquire for more details. All
volunteers are provided with shared housing.
