HarvestPlus Crop Specialist (Re-Advertised); Research Assistant-Agroenterprise Development (Re-Advertised) and Stores Clerk Jobs Vacancies in Rwanda

HarvestPlus is a Global Challenge Program of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). HarvestPlus seeks to develop and disseminate staple food crops, which are relatively high in bioavailable micronutrients as a promising means to reduce micronutrient malnutrition in developing countries.
The initial target micronutrients are iron, zinc, and vitamin A. HarvestPlus involves collaboration between ten CGIAR Centers and a large number of partner institutions in developing and developed countries.

The position: Crop Specialist (RE-ADVERTISED)
The Crop Specialist for beans under the HarvestPlus Challenge Program is a full time position based in Rwanda. The Crop Specialist will report to the Country Manager and be part of a team of component specialists set to accomplish the project goals. The crop specialist will be responsible for implementing and reporting the integration of the research, development, testing and delivery work on iron rich beans in Rwanda as well as other newly developed biofortified crops. This will lead to an efficient introduction and acceptance by consumers/customers of the biofortified beans in all regions of introduction.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:
• Conduct experiments and investigations into field crop problems and develop new methods of growing beans to secure more efficient production, higher yields, and improved quality.
• Support a scaling out strategy/structure for bean adoption in Rwanda to ensure that the improved varieties are available for use in the whole country.
• Expose farmers to new varieties and farming methods that promote higher yields and profitability.
• Keep and use detailed records on targeted farmers to enhance the understanding of farmers production needs and problems
• Participate in training of farmers and staff of local organizations.
• Organise farmer extension events

Requirements
• At least a Bachelors degree in Agricultural Sciences.
• At least three (3) years of experience working in NGO/Research environment that focuses on agricultural programs
• Data collection and field survey skills
• Experience with capacity building activities in production
• Experience in conducting field trials
• Computer knowledge in at least one analytical package: SPSS, Excel or other analytical packages
• Ability to prepare research and project reports, manuals and other dissemination materials.
• Strong interpersonal skills, fluent in English and good in French with strong writing skills;
• Willingness to travel extensively.

Position Title: RESEARCH ASSISTANT-AGROENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT (RE-ADVERTISED)

Position Summary:
The Position is based in CIAT Rwanda office, Kigali. The Research Assistant – Agro enterprise works closely with the Harvestplus Country Manager to design and support marketing platforms for beans and develops strategies to assist in linking partners to markets and market information while monitoring indicators for bean market and economic activities. The position also facilitates and manages multiple surveys for household and economic data in collaboration with researchers, field data collection staff, students and collaborators within the Harvestplus and CIAT Africa framework. He/she carries out data entry, initial analysis, and interpretation of the data and preparation of relevant reports.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:
1. Provide support and capacity building to Harvestplus programmes and farmer groups on Agro enterprise selection and development (group strengthening, collective marketing, business plan development, financial and credit management) based on needs assessments
2. From time to conduct market trend analysis and documentation including cross border trade tracking and general price tracking for bean products
3. Facilitate agri-business sales contract negotiation, management and market linkages for bean actors as well as strategies for agro enterprise value addition for bean products and promotion
4. Design and develop a marketing and promotional strategies and materials for Harvestplus in collaboration with country coordinator that can be sustained post-projects
5. Design a simple M&E framework for quantitative reporting on performance of the bean market activities and suggest areas for improvement;
6. Perform visits to the field to assess the effectiveness of the marketing and communication of marketing information in the delivery of bean products and bean information;
7. Develop a strategy for linking partners with bean market information available nationally and regionally based on recognized market information platforms.
8. Other tasks as may be assigned by the Harvestplus Country Manager.

Requirements

• At least two (2) years of experience facilitating marketing activities with partners
• Significant experience working with Agricultural programs
• Data collection and field survey skills
• Experience with capacity building activities for market activities
• Experience with data quality assessment
• Experience in both quantitative and qualitative data analysis using statistical and Econometric models
• Computer knowledge in at least one analytical package: SPSS, Excel or other analytical packages
• Ability to prepare research and project reports and manuals and other dissemination materials for market work

The Position :Stores clerk
The Store Clerk for beans under the HarvestPlus Challenge Program is a full time position based in Kigali, Rwanda. The clerk will report to the Country Manager and be part of a team set to accomplish the project goals. The store clerk will be responsible for management of storage of beans for dissemination and nutrition efficacy study under HarvestPlus.

Criteria for Success
• Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision, but also participate as a team member in accomplishment of duties.
• Possess excellent ability with figures, good judgment and a high level of respect for confidentiality.
• Demonstrate high level of integrity
• Strong ability to co-ordinate, prioritize and organize workload; take initiative and work under pressure.
• Highly effective planning, organizational, analysis, and multi-tasking skills with a positive attitude and a strong service orientation
• Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.

Minimum requirements:
1. Diploma in purchase and supply/ stores management/ accounting/ procurement
2. At least 2 years’ experience in either stores, procurement, accounts
3. Mathematics/ accounting at secondary education are added advantage.
4. Knowledge of agriculture products
5. Experience working in NGO
6. Must be fit for physically challenging work
