Mission of Friends of Clayoquot Sound:
To be peaceful, courageous advocates in protecting the ancient
temperate rainforest, ocean, rivers and biodiversity of Clayoquot
Sound.
Job Summary
Maintains and builds public education and advocacy campaigns to
protect Clayoquot Sound from industrial activities such as logging,
salmon farming and mining. Communicates with media, the public, other
organizations and government agencies. Writes and edits campaign
materials and coordinates social media. Assists with fundraising and
works with volunteers and board members.
Job Description:
Purpose of Job:
To advance conservation in Clayoquot Sound through diverse means
including: public education, political pressure, strategic
partnerships, policy changes, promotion of initiatives deemed to be
in-line with the mandate and vision of FOCS, and the deliberate and
strategic use of peaceful direct action.
Accountability
• Adheres to the FOCS mission statement and the non-violence code of
direct action.
• Delivers reports to board meetings.
• Participates in staff meetings and group’s strategic planning sessions.
• Contributes to consensus building and enacts group decisions.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Provide strategic advice and collaborate with the Board to plan
campaigns and establish campaign goals and objectives.
• Implement strategies and tactics to meet campaign objectives including
• Event organizing
• Drafting communications
• Organizing protests/public actions
• Field trips into the Sound
• Maintain communications with allies, public, and media around
campaigns and other issues of conservation or community concern in
Clayoquot Sound. This includes working on the FOCS print newsletter
and composing the monthly FOCS e-News and website postings, as well as
presentations to the public and groups.
• Coordination and cooperation with the Clayoquot Sound Conservation
Alliance and other key partner organizations for conservation in
Clayoquot Sound.
• Maintain active liaison with local First Nations allies, keeping
them abreast of FOCS activities and providing resources and research
to support their conservation work in their communities.
• Research and remain up to date on key scientific and conservation
issues in Clayoquot Sound.
• Write budgets for campaigns and events and assist with grant
selection and writing as directed by the board.
• Track and participate in conservation-oriented community initiatives
and efforts, which can be related to wider issues and areas.
Works with:
Friends of Clayoquot Sound Board, Volunteers, and the Sound Watch Researcher
Qualifications
• Experience and knowledge of Clayoquot Sound and related environmental issues.
• Experience working with non-profit organizations in volunteer or paid roles.
• Well organized, detail oriented and able to multi-task.
• Ability to delegate.
• Excellent communications and interpersonal skills.
• Valid BC driver’s licence.
• Knowledge of computer operating systems and office software.
• University or college degree in a related field an asset
Working Conditions:
• The FOCS campaigner works from the Tofino office and is salaried at
30hrs per week and 15$/hr. There are two weeks flexible paid vacation
time and another two weeks granted around the Christmas holidays.
• Travel is a requirement of the position (events, meetings, fieldwork, etc)
The position being offered includes a transition period during which
the new campaigner will work with the outgoing FOCS campaigner, Emery
Hartley. The transition period should ensure the new campaigner is
well grounded in the west coast community and has a good understanding
of the FOCS campaigns. During the transition the new campaigner will
focus primarily on organizing the Wild Salmon Awareness Week that FOCS
plans to host from September 26th to 30th. The transition period may
include reduced hours depending on the FOCS budget.
