Position: Riverkeeper
Type: full-time
Organization: Fraser Riverkeeper http://www.fraserriverkeeper.ca
Location: Vancouver, British Columbia
Fraser Riverkeeper (FRK) is currently hiring for a Riverkeeper to
manage, implement and oversee our conservation programs.
This is a full-time position for a passionate, multi-talented and
flexible individual capable of working independently and
collaboratively in a variety of capacities to fulfill FRK’s
conservation mission.
As in other Waterkeeper Alliance groups, the Riverkeeper position
embodies the heart and soul of the organization, pursuing its
conservation goals with well-informed tenacity, attention to detail,
and collaborative approaches to leadership — and acting as the public
face of FRK at events and in various forms of media.
As lead communicator of FRK’s advocacy and outreach, the Riverkeeper
crafts compelling stories about our advocacy efforts and helps create
persuasive, inclusive campaigns — communicating the critical nature of
our work in ways that draw in public involvement.
Position Requirements:
• Passionate dedication to conserving freshwater and marine wildlife and
habitat
• A proven track record of initiating and/or carrying out strategic,
successful advocacy campaigns on social or environmental issues
• Very strong written and verbal communications skills are fundamental
to the position, with experience in media relations or grant-writing a
plus
• Willingness to appear in media interviews (print, TV, radio)
• Ability to work, and lead, in a collaborative manner— both within
the organization when overseeing staff program duties, and externally
with community groups, NGOs, municipalities and government agencies
• Strategic organizational development skills, as the Riverkeeper will
work on growing the organization in partnership with the Executive
Director, board members, and other staff, helping define new staff
roles, direction, and FRK’s interface with national-level
constituency-building initiatives
• Willingness to communicate our mission and campaigns with potential
funders, both in foundation grants and in-person meetings with private
donors
• Appreciation and aptitude for researching/understanding ecosystems
and watershed issues— including coal and hydrocarbon exports,
aquaculture, sewage and water pollution issues, and other factors
affecting salmon, sturgeon and other species in the Fraser and beyond
Required Education and Experience:
• A Bachelor’s Degree in communications, political science, natural
resource management, political science, or a related field of study,
or equivalent experience
• A minimum of three years of experience in conservation advocacy,
organizational leadership, project management and/or campaign
development
