Ecology Ottawa is looking for a Clean En
ergy Organizer to join a dynamic team.
The Clean Energy Organizer will organize to stop the proposed Energy East tar
sands pipeline and promote action on climate change, while strengthening
Ecology Ottawa’s volunteer and supporter network. This position involves
immersion in the tools and techniques of grassroots organizing, canvassing,
volunteer management, data management and communications.
Reporting to the Executive Director, the overall goal of the Clean Energy
Organizer is to support the development of a movement of people in the City of
Ottawa that are working together to stop the proposed Energy East tar sands
pipeline and promote action on climate change. This goal is pursued by: (i)
developing and supporting a volunteer leadership team; (ii) cultivating a core
group of like-minded organizations and associations; (iii) conducting outreach
to expand and deepen the Ecology Ottawa climate change and tar sands support
base; (iv) mobilizing the above-mentioned team, core and base to carry out
local initiatives and engage decision-makers; and (v) tracking interactions
with our supporters for the purpose of facilitating the above-mentioned
objectives.
The Clean Energy Organizer will also participate in strategic planning
discussions, assist with institutional fundraising (grant writing and
reporting), and assist with key Ecology Ottawa events as necessary.
This position requires 40 hours per week with about 16 to 20 hours per week
falling outside of regular (9 to 5) working hours.
Successful candidates will have some combination of the following:
• Experience with grassroots organizing and direct outreach;
• A passion for environmental and political advocacy;
• Policy knowledge of the proposed Energy East pipeline as well as broader tar
sands policy issues at the local, provincial and national levels;
• Policy knowledge of climate change and clean energy, especially at the local
level;
• A strong commitment to social and environmental justice;
• A relevant educational, work and/or volunteer background (familiarity with
database and contact management systems is a major asset);
• Attention to detail;
• Strong oral and writing skills (French language skills are a major asset);
• Strong interpersonal skills; and
• A good sense of humour.
