ABOUT THE PARTNER
The Chiquitano Forest Conservation Foundation (FCBC) is an independent
and private non-profit organization, formed in September 1999. The
founding members are: Friends of Nature Foundation (FAN Bolivia),
Society for Conservation of Wildlife (WCS) and NUR University. Our
mission is to promote conservation and sustainable development in the
Chiquitano dry forest and ecoregions in partnership with stakeholders.
FCBC is recognized for its contribution to the conservation and
sustainable development of tropical dry forests.
THE VOLUNTEER’S ROLE
Overall placement purpose and specific volunteer placement objectives:
Support the Unit of the Environmental Information Systems of FCBC in
the areas of data and map generation and management for different
initiatives and projects carried out by the institution, contributing
to the fulfillment of the work plans in the region, especially in the
Chiquitano Model Forest Observatory.
Specific Objectives:
• Organize, systemize and maintain the topographic data. Fill in the
metadata information in the database that enters in the digital
version (CD) of SIA Unit.
• Process satellite images to monitor the ecoregion.
• Elaborate thematic maps.
• Technical assistance in courses on the use of GIS and GPS.
• Support the establishment and operation of the Chiquitano Model
Forest Observatory.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Essential requirements
• University degree in any Natural Resource Management related fields,
such as biology, agronomy, forestry, environmental sciences, geology
etc.
• Knowledge and experience in GIS
• Experience and knowledge on managing related software, such as
ArcGIS, ERDAS, etc.
• Excellent time management and priority setting skills.
• Sound judgment as well as adaptable and flexible attitude.
• Able to communicate effectively with diverse groups of people on
both popular and technical matters.
TRAINING AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT
Our training and support package covers the costs of being an overseas
volunteer, allowing you to enjoy a modest but healthy lifestyle while
you volunteer abroad. This includes:
• Attendance at a Cuso International assessment day (candidates must
cover the first $150 of the most cost-effective travel expenses and
accommodation costs)
• Travel and accommodation costs associated with pre-departure training
• Return airfare and visa/permit (this includes a return flight in the
case of a family emergency)
• Coverage for required vaccinations, medications and comprehensive
health insurance
• Accommodation while overseas
• A modest living allowance, which varies depending on the country
where you are placed
• Quarterly payments to support you in your placement
• Modest support for accompanying partners
