The
Clinton Development Initiative (CDI) develops and operates agribusiness
projects that empower smallholder farmers to increase their economic potential.
In Malawi, Tanzania, and Rwanda, CDI integrates commercial farms and other
agribusinesses with smallholder outreach to increase smallholder farmers’
access to local markets and enable them to participate equitably in those
markets. CDI’s mode puts farmers first by increasing their access to knowledge,
inputs, services, and markets to improve their crop yields and incre

ase and
diversify their incomes. CDI works in close collaboration with governments,
nongovernmental organizations, social investors, and farmer organizations.

Position
Description:
The
Vegetable Crops Supervisor/Agronomist is responsible for assisting the Farm
Manager at Matimba Farm in all aspects relating to vegetable cropping
programme, cropping budgets, land preparation, planting, fertilizer
application, scouting for pests and diseases, spraying, harvesting and
measuring yields.
The
Vegetable Crops Supervisor/Agronomist will oversee the cropping programme for
vegetables at Matimba Farm and the neighboring out –grower farmers; he/she will
also be responsibility for the supervision of land preparation, crop rotations,
plant population, pests/diseases prevention and elimination, soil fertility,
soil conservation, vegetables harvesting, grading and packaging. 
Required
Expertise& Experience:
  • Degree
    in Crop Science or Agronomy with a minimum of 3 years’or diploma in
    Crop Science, Agronomy with a minimum of 5 years work experience in
    commercial vegetables and fruit production preferably in a commercial
    farming environment.
Advantage:
  • Additional
    qualifications and experience in business management
  • Experience
    in training farmers on improved agricultural technologies and supervision;
  • Agronomy
    familiarity  with i) horticulture agronomy , ii) crop diseases and
    pests and relevant pesticides, insecticides and fungicides, iii) common
    weeds and herbicides and iv) large mechanized farm equipment, and v)
    irrigation systems and their operation
  • Business
    knowledge in crop markets and their timing as well as extensive
    understanding of business profit maximization
Skills:
  • Critical
    thinker and fast learner and ability to help farmers, local leaders, and
    other stakeholders in the assigned area in their decision to join the
    program;
  • Knowledge
    on the use of GPS-equipment on mapping and area calculation; previous
    experience using Farm Force software
  • High
    level people skills and ability to build relationships with a diversity of
    people at all levels.
  • Must
    be detail oriented, with strong reviewing skills and a high degree of
    accuracy is essential.
  • Ability
    to work independently with minimal supervision;
  • High
    levels of integrity
  • Proficiency
    in MS Office (including Excel, Word and PowerPoint), and strong computer
    skills
  • Must
    have strong numerical skills (ability to run basic financial and economic
    analysis e.g. gross margin analysis, fertilizer calibration, determination
    of plant population, etc.)
  • Fluent
    in Kiswahili, with good command in English language to participate in
    meeting and communicate with supervisors.
