CHF is seeking an Education Specialist for a proposed 4-year, $6 million Department of Labor-funded project to combat child labor in the rubber growing areas of Liberia. This project will promote improved policies to address child labor in rubber producing areas and enhanced monitoring and enforcement of such policies, with a focus on company-owned or operated rubber plants. The project will also support the direct delivery of services to children actively engaged in or at-risk of various forms of child labor and their households in communities where livelihoods are largely dependent on smallholder rubber production.
The Education Specialist will be responsible for activities designed to promote access to education and training opportunities as a means of reducing child labor. This will include implementing strategies to support children’s continued enrollment, retention, and completion of educational or vocational training services; supporting the direct delivery of education and training services to target children; promoting strategies to encourage community involvement in children’s access to education and healthy learning environments; improving the quality of education and training programs through methodologies that include teacher training; and participating in the analyses of needs at the community level and resources available for addressing the needs of target households and children in order to suggest approaches for filling gaps in programming.
Qualifications:
* 3+ years of international development project experience in a leadership position responsible for developing education interventions and the technical aspects related to the proposed strategy, including student assessment, teacher training, educational materials/curriculum development, educational management, and educational monitoring and information systems
* Significant technical experience in basic and secondary education projects
* Understanding of child labor issues, including special needs of children removed from child labor when they enter/return to school
* Experience working with vulnerable children and their households, preferably in Liberia and/or West Africa
* Experience working successfully with Ministries of Education and other government agencies, networks of educators, employers’ organizations, and trade unions or comparable entities
* Fluency in written and spoken English required
* Second language experience preferred; knowledge of local languages preferred but not required
