Position description:
The BC Chapter of Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS-BC) is seeking a Terrestrial Conservation intern. As one of Canada’s oldest non-profit conservation groups, we protect wilderness in every corner of B.C. and deep into the ocean. We have been protecting Canada’s nature since 1963; 47 years of successful conservation experience. We are dedicated to keeping at least half of British Columbia’s public land and water wild.

This position entails working at our Vancouver office. The position is for 37.5 hours per week for a maximum of 16 weeks.

Preferred start date: June 20, 2011

Responsibilities:
Reporting to the CPAWS-BC Executive Director and Director of Terrestrial Conservation, the Terrestrial Conservation Intern will work with the Terrestrial Team and Communications Director on a variety of campaigns, including:
• Get Outside BC youth project event logistics and marketing (A project organized and put on by CPAWS-BC, Parks Canada, BC Parks, Mountain Equipment Co-op and Child and Nature Alliance for youth aged 14-18)
• Hosting educational workshops on current terrestrial campaigns
• Fundraising to support CPAWS-BC terrestrial campaigns
• Public outreach to promote support for campaigns and programs
• Research support for campaign issues, including:
– support for our northern terrestrial campaigns on climate
change related work and land use plans
– working on campaigns focusing on the threatened Boreal Caribou
of northeastern British Columbia
– working on the Flathead Valley campaign, an area that has the
highest concentration of grizzly bears in the interior of
North America, and boasts the greatest predator-prey showdowns
in North America
• General terrestrial campaign duties as assigned

Qualifications:
• University student currently studying Environmental Sciences, Environmental Studies or a related discipline with an interest in working in an environmental field
• Experience in community outreach
• Interest in working with First Nations and other environmental non-profit organizations
• Well organized and energetic
• Excellent computer skills (including word processing and basic excel skills)
• Willingness to carry out all aspects of the task at hand to accomplish goals
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Works well as part of a collaborative team
• Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems and websites are assets
• Passion for protecting B.C.’s wilderness and oceans

Compensation:
$10.50 an hour
