ROLE OVERVIEW

The Sustainability Manager is a leading voice and advocate within the
Aquarium on organizational environmental sustainability. As the
Aquarium’s authority on environmentall

y sustainable operations, the
Sustainability Manager will work with Senior Managers, Directors and
Operational Managers, to maintain the efficiency and efficacy of the
Aquarium’s ISO 14001 certified Environmental Management System (EMS)
and to develop and implement a Corporate Sustainability Strategy
(CSS).

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Leads the development of organization-wide environmental
sustainability plans, and environmental programs, policies and
procedures to ensure ongoing ISO 14001 certification requirements are
met by:
• Leading development of annual goals, work plans, targets and key
performance indicators with respect to the EMS;
• In conjunction with members of the EMS team, creating specific plans
e.g. sustainable purchasing plans, greenhouse gas management plans,
etc.;
• Creating budgets for the Corporate Sustainability Strategy and EMS;
• Monitoring performance on the EMS and CSS;
• Leading the development of mitigation tactics and corrective actions;
• Providing support to all staff of the Aquarium with respect to
departmental environmental initiatives;
• Remaining current with relevant environmental and health and safety
municipal, provincial and federal initiatives and requirements;
• Leading the preparation for the internal and third party external
audits of the EMS.

Advises Senior Management on organizational sustainability issues by:
• Researching best practices with corporate sustainability and
environmental issues;
• Identifying potential organizational risks as they relate to sustainability;
• Assisting in the management of organization health and safety
procedures and incidents;
• Preparing an annual report on the EMS and CSS;
• Conducting internal environmental management system and legal
compliance audits.

Represents the organization and its accomplishments on sustainability
to external audiences by:
• Participating in external committees and Advisory Boards related to
organizational environmental sustainability;
• Presenting on topics of sustainability;
• Researching appropriate “green company” lists that VA is best
suited
to participate in and coordinating nominations and submissions;
• Working closely with department heads and senior management to
ensure accurate and consistent messaging in all areas of internal and
external communication;
• Facilitating the coordination of environmental events and workshops;
• Facilitating training of staff and volunteers with respect to
sustainability issues and practices;
Supports the External Relations Gift Acceptance Committee in its
efforts to identify suitability of corporate partners with which to
partner by:
• Working directly with internal gift acceptance policy and process
committee on a regular basis to review potential donor profiles to
determine suitability of relationship with VA;
• Conducting detailed review of individual and corporate
sustainability reporting policies and processes, commitments to
continuous improvement and transparency of overall operations and
reporting.

operations;

• Promptly aiding in Emergency protocol;
• Performing additional duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience
• A minimum of 5 years experience in environmental planning,
management or related areas;
• Degree in environmental science, management, planning, biology,
ecology or related field;
• Specific experience with Environmental Management Systems and ISO
14001 certification requirements is desirable;
• Experience with participating in or conducting environmental audits
is an asset.

Skills
• Proven experience in managing complex projects with multiple
stakeholders and handling complex negotiations;
• Ability to think strategically at an organizational level and to
collaborate with a wide range of internal and external experts;
• Strong communication skills and ability to present complex concepts
in a clear, concise and simplified manner both verbally and in
writing;
• Exceptional ability to problem solve in a logical and methodical manner;
• Attention to detail;
• Adaptable and determined to succeed;
• Active demonstration of the company’s values and code of conduct.
• Able to keep on task with strategic items while managing day-to-day
responsibilities;

Working Conditions
• The incumbent works primarily in a shared office environment,
however may need to access all areas of the Aquarium for audit
purposes;
• The position is primarily non-physical.
