Under nutrition in the elderly

Malnutrition
include under nutrition, which is the result of a deficiency of one or more nutrient.
Under nutrition can be related to the inability to obtain food that contain the
essential nutrient, failure to consume essential nutrients the poor use of
nutrient by the body, disease conditions that increase the body’s need for
nutrient and a rapid excretion of nutrient s from the body. It generally occurs
as a result of poverty, illness, neglect, poor dietary planning etc, especially
in vulnerable group (Lutz, 2207).

Elderly
persons are at risk of under nutrition (define as hypo nutrition or deficient
nutrition) due to physical, cognitive or functional decline. Under nutrition,
if not addressed, perpetuates the process of decline in health. It is becoming
increasingly prevalent in the ever growing elderly population (Sullivan, 2010).
According
to Compell (2009), there are health benefits of elderly people who are not
underweight. Low body mass in old age is associated with increases risk of
morbidity and mortality. When body mass is lower than the ideal average
underweight elderly people lacks the metabolic reserves they require for
responding to infection and if they have been underweight for a long time, they
may have been eating a diet that was inadequate in many nutrients (Baker,
2009).
