The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) is Canada’s pre-eminent,
national community-based voice for p
ublic wilderness protection. Since 1963
CPAWS has taken a lead role in establishing two-thirds of Canada’s protected
wild spaces — an area over seven times the size of Nova Scotia.
Position Description:
The Public Outreach Coordinators will be responsible for organizing educational
table displays and engaging with the public at special events and popular
destinations to inspire and broaden support for boreal conservation issues in
Manitoba. During these events, the Public Outreach Coordinator may solicit
petition signatures in support of CPAWS’ woodland caribou conservation
campaign.
The summer intern will also utilize CPAWS’ existing social media accounts
to showcase opportunities for public involvement in conservation advocacy
efforts, sharing their tabling or event location in an engaging manner, and
inviting members of the public who are already supporters to join them. This
position may include recruitment and management of volunteers, and provides
chapter support in member recruitment and fund development.
The position may include other duties as assigned to support CPAWS’ staff and
campaigning work.
Qualifications
• Extremely outgoing, energetic, and approachable
• Passionate about the Boreal Forest, wildlife, conservation issues and
northern
communities
• Strong written and oral communications skills; comfortable communicating with
the public
• Interest in a flexible schedule to accommodate tabling at events that may
take place on evenings and weekends
• Comfortable working outdoors and interacting with the public
• Educational background or knowledge in environmental issues
• An understanding and sensitivity of cultural issues
• Highly adaptable
• Administrative capabilities, including computer skills
• Exceptionally organized
• Experience or knowledge of social networking avenues and public outreach
• Works well independently and as part of a team
• Valid driver’s license and access to vehicle or transportation preferred but
not mandatory
