Strategies to improve teaching of physical education in schools

Implementing school-based physical
education programme requires considerable investment of resources and may
include some or all of the following components as stated by Bailey (2006):
·
Curriculum
on physical education  taught by trained
teachers
·
Supportive
school environment/policy
·
Involvement
of parents/family

Changing curricula to
include physical education requires partnerships with teachers, parents,
teachers’ associations and school boards. Teachers and local officials need to
commit to providing students with opportunities to engage in physical activity
during school hours. When developing curricula for physical education classes. Some
key ideas to keep in mind are listed by Macfayden (2010):
  • Diversify and increase the number of physical
education classes and/or sports classes to include aerobic/endurance,
    strength, flexibility, and coordination activities
  • Offer a variety and choice of physical education
classes so that students’ age, gender, disability, needs and interests are
    taken into consideration
  • Promote and support the use of local environments
(e.g. beaches, hills) and facilities (e.g. public parks) for physical
    education and/or sports classes
  • Provide adequate funding for physical education
and/or sports classes and appropriate physical activity facilities and
    training for physical education teachers
  • From a policy perspective, devise or provide a
national curriculum framework for physical education classes and address
the development of a regulatory approach to make physical and/or sports
    education classes compulsory in schools.
