The Staff Writer
reports to the Managing Editor of the Daily Commercial News, Reed Construction
Data’s daily construction industry newspaper both online and in print. The
staff writer is responsible for investigating and developing story lines,
writing daily news and news briefs and following up on story leads and assignments
as required.
The position also
requires a comfortable working knowledge of newspaper pagination, photography
and social media use. Familiarity with video and using a content management
interface is an added benefit.
Main
Responsibilities:
– Responsible for
researching, interviewing, developing and writing comprehensive editorial
content on a daily basis, for both print and online, while maintaining high
editorial standards
– Liaise with sources including architects, engineers, contractors, academics, government
officials, associat
ion leaders, and labour representatives
– Attend industry events as required
– Take photos as needed and use social media daily
Qualifications:
– A journalism
degree/diploma or equivalent experience is required
– A minimum of five years of professional journalism experience
– Experience in a daily newspaper environment an asset
– Highly developed reporting, interviewing and communication skills
– Experience in writing about labour, economy, architecture and construction a
definite asset
– Full working knowledge of CP Style – Strong proofreading skills
– Ability to use Adobe InDesign and a working knowledge of and experience with
newspaper layout
– Superior ability to meet deadlines in a newspaper environment
– Strong ability to work both independently and in a team environment
– Strong ability to manage changing priorities and highly flexible
– Ability to use social media to source stories and push out content
– Familiarity with shooting and editing news video an added benefit
– Familiarity with using a content management system an added benefit
– Experience with using Adobe InCopy and Adobe Photoshop an added benefit
