Springs

Spring
is the natural outflow of subsurface or underground water at the earth surface.
It is also called out cropping of the water table. Springs is commonly found on
the slopes of hillsides and river valleys

As
a gift of nature, spring can be tapped to complement the water requirement of a
household and small community but can not meet the demand of a big town. This
is so because small springs are seasonal and this makes the water yield to be
very small and erratic. The water yield of spring depends on the topographical
and geological conditions of the areas where they are found.
That
is to say that some spring water can be soft, hard, saline, impure and pure. To
drive this point home, spring water derived from shallow spring is opened to
many abuses and contamination and therefore must be disinfected before
consumption. However, water derived from deep or artesian spring is of good
quality and can be consumed with little or no treatment.
Protection of spring
Spring
water must be protected on possibly disinfected before use. Firstly, the
immediate environment of the spring must be kept clean at all times by cutting
the bushes and the surroundings of the spring should be cemented wall fence
should be provided to prevent intruders and animals from coming in to contact
with it. The spring should be protected by enclosing it in a water tight concrete
block and should be covered always. Tap should be fixed to the wall to
facilitate easy withdrawal or collection of the water. The water must be
disinfected with chlorine or other disinfectants before it is used for human
consumption.
