Senior Clerk Job Vacancy in London

Who we are – 1 Gray’s Inn Square Barristers’ Chambers – a respected, leading, modern and progressive common law chambers. We are seeking a brand new and dynamic Senior Clerk to lead the staff team and work with the Head of Chambers and Management Committee in managing Chambers and ensuring our future success within the legal sector and beyond. Your Salary – Will be commensurate with the Senior Clerks position in a leading Chambers, performance related and negotiable depending on evidence based expertise and experience. All applicants will be required to disclose their current salary and conditions.

Your Profile – Must include significant and evidence based expertise and experience of Senior Clerking or Practice Management at a senior managerial position within a recognised (e.g. Legal 500 or Chambers and Partners) leading Chambers, or equivalent experience in a legal (including a leading solicitors firm), public service or commercial environment.

Your Role – As Senior Clerk you will be the senior member of staff and a high-profile public face of a leading Chambers. You will report directly to the Head of Chambers and Management Committee to, amongst other things, advise on and implement Chambers policy. You will be ultimately responsible for managing all other members of staff and the practices of all tenants and pupils within Chambers.

You are expected to lead by example – this is a ‘hands on role’. In particular you are ultimately responsible for sourcing and obtaining instructions for all counsel at all levels (from Queens Counsel to working pupils) and across all practice areas: civil & commercial law, criminal law, employment law, family law, immigration law, inquest and public inquiries and regulatory law. You will be expected to aggressively develop both old and new business and you must be familiar with or have the ability to quickly acquire knowledge and expertise in existing, new and proposed business models within the legal sector. This includes Direct Access, ProcureCo and SupplyCo. You must be familiar with or have the ability to quickly acquire knowledge and expertise in the Bar Code of Conduct, the Bar Standards Board and Legal Ombudsman complaints and discipline procedures, the Equality and Diversity Code for the Bar and the new Equalities Act and money laundering policies in legal organisations. You must have excellent communication/negotiation/mediation skills (both oral and written) and experience of media relations. You are expected to play an active and influential role in the on-going restructuring and future success of Chambers.
