The Seasoned Spoon is a non-profit, vegetarian, cooperative café
located in Champlain College at Trent University. As well as serving
delicious, affordable, local, and organic food, we also provide a
number of educational initiatives through

volunteer opportunities,
workshops, speakers and conferences. We offer employment opportunities
to students and are proud of our strong community linkages with local
producers, businesses and community organizations. We seek to provide
a collegial space where we build community through food.

We are excited to be offering a part-time, 8 month contract position
(30 hours/week, over 31 weeks, from August 31st, 2015 until April
22nd, 2016 – this includes a 3 week unpaid break from December 14th –
January 3rd). The position is remunerated at $14.50/hour. The café is
closed during exam periods and school holidays including reading weeks
and winter break–there may or may not be work during these times.
This position requires an individual willing to work during café
operating hours as well as Saturday mornings bi-weekly.

Job Description

We are seeking a self-directed individual to work in a leadership role
in the café and help coordinate educational opportunities and events.
The Kitchen Manager will spend approximately 20-25 hours per week
preparing foods and overseeing staff in the café. Additional hours
will be spent purchasing food and conducting other managerial duties
as described below.

The Kitchen Manager is responsible for:
• Overseeing day-to-day operations & maintenance of the café
• Supervising, training, and directing staff and volunteers
• Providing mentorship and leadership to student employees
• Menu planning and food costing
• Ordering and sourcing food, in conjunction with the General Manager
• Food inventory
• Ensuring consistent food quality and setting appropriate portion sizes
• Setting schedules & conducting regular staff meetings in conjunction
with the General Manager
• Providing staff feedback and evaluation
• Coordinating catering events, including menu planning & food
production/presentation
• Providing regular updates and maintaining communication with the
Board of Directors and other Managers
• Creating and implementing systems of organization and cleanliness in
the kitchen and café
• Adhering to regulations pertaining to Food Handling & Safety as
outlined by the Peterborough County/City Health Unit
• Bi-weekly farmers market pick-ups and other shopping as needed

Required Skills and Qualifications:
• Knowledge and interest in the politics of food and agriculture
• Strong food preparation and cooking experience within a busy environment
• Knowledge of cooking seasonal, vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free food
• Experience and knowledge of café/restaurant operations and maintenance
• Experience with staff training and supervision
• Experience working with/supervising volunteers
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Excellent menu costing skills and the ability to work within a limited budget
• Good organizational skills, punctuality, and attention to detail
• Access to a vehicle
• Food Handlers Certificate

Assets:
• Knowledge of cooperative structures
• Experience with Excel (for food ordering and scheduling purposes)

An awareness of the challenges and opportunities that are inherent
with local food sourcing and food sourcing outside mainstream channels
of commercial food production will be important part of this position.
Understanding the Spoon’s role as a cooperative, social enterprise and
keeping a commitment to the Spoon’s mandate is necessary.
