Save
the Children is seeking a Business Development Consultant for a USAID-funded
SCOPE project, which aims to support the Rwandan Education Board to create and
roll-out a school-community partnership model that supports improved learning
and literacy for children in grades 1-3.
The
Business Development Consultant will work closely with SCOPE Book Development
and Use team to strengthen Rwandan publishers’ capacity in business management,
risk management, communications, and marketing.
Consultancy
Objectives
The
objective of this consultancy is to design and facilitate a Business Management
training for a three
days (3) focusing on
Business Management, Marketing, Business Extension, Business Tracking and
Optimization and Business Risk Management for Rwandan publishers. The
consultant will deliver the training and draw a practical plan with each Rwandan
publisher.  This training is intended to build the capacity of local
publishers on business management, risk management, communications, and
marketing.
Scope
of Services
The
consultant shall ensure the completion of the following activities in accordance
with the terms and conditions of the consultancy contract:
The
consultant will be expected to:
  1. Design
    and facilitate a three
    day (3) business skills, risk
    management and marketing training exercise for approximately 20
     local Rwandan in September 2017,
  2. Through
    the business skills, risk management and marketing training exercise,
    provide participants with:
  3. An
    understanding of the business management and development (planning,
    financial management, record keeping, product management), marketing
    (sales management, product/ service pricing, advertising techniques, and
    customer care and communication) and risk management.
  4. An
    understanding of microenterprise development and essentials appropriate
    for small businesses run by local publishers.
  5. An
    understanding of business related legal issues including but not limited
    to business contracting, taxation, and business associations;
  6. An
    understanding of business risk identification and management.
Deliverable
outputs:
The
activities and expected outputs are as follows:
  • Prepare
    objectives, contents, and tools required for the training.
  • Facilitate
    a three
    day
    business management, marketing and business risk management (BRM) training
    workshop in Kigali;
  • Provide
    relevant training materials in the area of business management, marketing
    and BRM to participants;
  • A
    comprehensive report of the training;
  • A
    user-friendly training curriculum
  • Provide
    the project management with a feedback analysis report from participants
    on the three
    day
    workshop
Methodology
  • The
    consultancy will involve a training to take place in Kigali. The training
    will be documented in a brief report describing the work undertaken and
    the progress or challenges encountered, as well as recommendations for
    publishers and the project.
  • The
    reference point within SCI will be the Book Development Coordinator with
    expected collaboration with the Book Development and Use Officer in charge
    of Book Promotion as well as the SCOPE Technical Advisor.
  • Participants
    have different levels of experience in publishing. Both genders will be
    represented.
  • The
    project will provide all necessary equipment: projector, flipchart, office
    supplies and other materials at the request of the Consultants in order to
    ensure efficient completion of the training program.
  • The
    preferred working language is English or Kinyarwanda. Materials should
    prepared in English. The reporting language is English.
  • The
    project will ensure printing of all training materials.
Duration
of role
  • This
    agreement is for a period of ten (9) days effective from September 10,
    2017 to September 20, 2017. The consultant is expected to prepare the
    training during three (3) days, facilitate it for another three (3) days,
    and prepare the report with additional three (3) days.

Payment
  • 1st
    installment: the training consultant will be paid 30% of the quoted amount
    after the submission of the final training curriculum and plan.
  • 2nd
    installment, the remaining amount shall be paid upon completion of the
    training and the acceptance of the final report.
General
Commitments:
A
ll the outputs – Reports, training curriculum, etc. produced by this
assignment will not be disseminated in part or whole without express authority
from Save the Children .Thus the consultant shall not produce these materials
in any form (electronic, hard copies, etc.) to a third party without a written
permission from Save the Children.
Key
selection criteria
  • Degree
    in publishing, business management, business development or similar
    disciplines
  • Experience
    in training publishers, booksellers or any other book actors
  • Experience
    working in business development in Eastern Africa, preferably Rwanda
  • Extended
    knowledge about the Rwandan book industry and its efforts in promoting the
    culture of reading in children
  • Knowledge
    of Save the Children and its internal processes will be beneficial but is
    not essential

must adhere to.
