Plowshare Farm is a diversified, horse-powered Organic farm located just a short bike ride from the town of Elora, Ontario, a 25 minute drive north of Guelph, and 1 hour 45 minutes
west of Toronto. We grow 3 acres of organic vegetables which we market through our CSA program as well as at the Orangeville Farmers Market each Saturday. Not having a tractor, we work with our 2 draft horses Sally and Milly to cultivate the garden. We also have 2 dairy cows, which we milk by hand twice a day and enjoy their milk to drink or else to make cheese or yogourt with. The farm is also home to 4 riding horses, 2 ponies, 2 ducks, 2 goats, 3 dogs and many cats!
Interns will be able to participate in all aspects of the farm, including animal care and the farmers market, though at this time of year our work mainly consists of bringing in the season’s bountiful harvest!! We provide all meals, on-farm accommodations, use of our farm vehicle as well as a small weekly stipend. Aside from on farm learning through work and instruction, interns will also have the opportunity to attend 2 off farm education days. The first of these is a CRAFT day farm tour and workshop, where you will meet many other new farmers (craftontario.ca). The second day each month is determined by the interns interest, and could be anything! The successful applicant(s) will have excellent communication skills and a good work ethic.
