Harvard-affiliated international NGO that has partnered with the Government of
Rwanda to strengthen the health system and support poverty reduction
initiatives in rural Rwanda since 2005. PIH/IMB is seeking outstanding
candidates for the following position.
Position Title: Verbal Autopsy Study Coordinator
Reports to: Director of Research, M&E and Health Information Systems
at Partners In Health
Location: Based in Rwinkwavu, Kayonza District, Rwanda with extensive
travel to rural villages throughout Kayonza and Kirehe districts
Through knowing the factors that increase risk of child death we can understand
better how to prevent deaths in the future. Verbal Autopsy (VA) is an interview
that is carried out with a family after someone has died to better understand
the circumstances surrounding the death. We are hiring a Verbal Autopsy Study
Coordinator to lead Verbal Autopsy team based in the Eastern Province.
This is a challenging position involving extensive fieldwork. The VA Study
Coordinator should be prepared to travel to remote villages to supervise and/
or conduct interviews in all weather conditions. We are looking for a candidate
who is a natural leader, is highly organized, is passionate about child health
and has strong people skills. Discretion and good communication will be
essential for leading a team and conducting VA interviews with grieving
families. We particularly value backgrounds in counseling and research. Our
ideal candidate criteria are listed below:
Essential requirements: You must have these qualifications as a minimum
to be considered for this position.
• Education: AO in nursing, social work, public health or other relevant area
• 3+ years research experience
• 2+ years supervision experience
• Strong organizational skills
• Experience in administration and project coordination
• Manage and prioritize projects with attention to detail
• Perform basic functions using a computer (MS Word, MS Excel, internet
browsing and e-mail)
• Flexible, reliable, strong communicator, responsive and resourceful
• Fluency in Kinyarwanda and English
Desirable requirements: Candidates with some/all of these requirements
will be at an advantage
• French fluency
• Experience in counseling
• Motorbike license

suitable for the role (have a proven interest in maternal and child health,
experience in field work, are adaptable and have the ability to learn quickly)
