Our birth house in Uganda, ‘Ot Nywal Me Kuc’ (House of
Birth and Peace) is in its fifth year of operation. It is a grassroots, solar
powered, community led project that supports the work of traditional midwives
in the suurrounding areas. The clinic is located in Atiak, Uganda, in the
extreme north of the country. The clinic provides the following services:
Comprehensive prenatal care both on site and through mobile outreach programs
into rural areas.

Education and support groups for pregnant women. Labor
support. Post partum care. Transport to and from clinic for laboring mothers
and post partum families. Ambulance services for emergencies. Post partum
follow up of babies from birth until 6 months. Education and support of
traditional midwives.

The duties of the Birth House Manager will include:
– Coordinating prenatal outreach/mobile midwives
project
-Maintaining and ordering supplies for the clinic
-Working with traditional midwives to coordinate
schedules and clinical coverage.
-Working with and supporting foreign volunteer
midwives and coordinating their stay.

local artisans to create crafts that support the clinic.

email, phone and in person.
This is a one year (possibly longer) ‘volunteer
position’. Airfare, room and board and a small stipend will be offered.
Who we are looking for:
This is not a typical placement or location. We are a
grassroots organization and the person selected to manage the birth house must
be comfortable working in a ‘hands on’ capacity. We are not a big NGO, we
struggle for financial stability and sustainability and the ideal candidate
will understand this and want to support our growth and become a member of our
‘family’! Additionally, the basic job structure will be outlined but working in
a post conflict zone, there will be lots of unanticipated surprises that
require enormous flexibility and creativity.
The clinic is located in a rural area with a
population who has been effected by war. The ideal birth house manager will be
excited about maternal and child health and want to learn about reproductive
health in Uganda. Former managers have been nurses, public health managers and
midwives and student midwives. The successfull candidate will be comfortable
living rurally, but most importantly, comfortable with the terms ‘cultural
competence’ and ‘anti-racism’. The ideal candidate will be willing to learn the
local language, engage with the community around her and work passionately to
support the local community in making birth safer for the mothers in the
region.
