Position Description:
The Micheweni Millennium Villages Project is supported by the Earth Institute
at Columbia University and Millennium Promise Alliance and implemented by the
PHL -IDC is a new bottom-up approach to lift developing country villages out of
the poverty trap that afflicts more than a billion people worldwide.
The project design includes innovative approaches to integrated rural
development (IRD) such as supporting interventions in multiple sectors that
cover agriculture, health, education, water and sanitation, community
development and infrastructure development to capture synergies.
Implementations being facilitated by participatory community decision making,
local community leadership, and structures with the ultimate goal 10 scale up
the lessons at national level.
The project is looking for a professional staff to fill the post of the
Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment Coordinator. This post will be based at
the project office in Chake Chake, Pemba with the frequent travels to the
project site.
Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment Coordinator for the Micheweni millennium
project (one post)
Roles: The Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment Coordinator of the Micheweni
millennium villages’ project will be responsible for planning &
implementation of Agriculture, Fisheries & Environmental Activities in the
Micheweni Millennium Villages Project. He/she will work with other team members
to promote knowledge management and usage at the community to ensure
sustainable food production and enhancement of environmental improvement
activities. The. incumbent will build strong relationships with the community
members with a focus on impact, results and community ownership of all empowerment
processes. The overall goal of the position is to assist the village in
achieving the MDGs.
Duties and responsibilities:
Sensitization and mobilization of community to participate in project
activities.
Organize and facilitate appropriate training programs for the community and the
committees.
Facilitate the planning, implementation and data collection of agriculture,
fisheries and environment enhancement activities.
Participate in monitoring and evaluation of all planned activities.
Provide the necessary technical support to Community-based Committees so as to
strengthen the overall performance of the project. .
Develop appropriate follow up tools and organize follow-ups on the same to
ensure smooth progress of agriculture, fishing and environment project
activities.
Identify together with the community the relevant interventions for the
community and facilitate their full participation towards project ownership.
Promote high level collaboration, communication and co-operation with
government ministries and other stakeholders and actors in the community.
Document all sector activity progress on regular basis.
Manage the community agriculture, fisheries and environment sectors in the
Village
Essential qualifications, experience and competencies
A Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, natural resources, environment or relevant
field but masters in the relevant field is preferred.
At least 5+ years’ experience in the agricultural specifically in fisheries and
Environmental sectors, preferably working with community-based projects.
A highly motivated individual with a professional background in agriculture and
environmental issues ..
Experience in value chain development based on smallholder farming
Practical knowledge and application of community dynamics in an integrated
community project.
Experience working in an integrated community development project.
A team player with good interpersonal skills in communication and dissemination
of knowledge.
Proven problem solving and organizational skills, flexibility and calm under
pressure.
