LICENSING DEPARTMENT
POSITION TITLE: Manager, Media
REPORTS TO: Director, Licensing Operations
LOCATION: Toronto

OVERALL ACCOUNTABILITY:
This role has the primary responsibility for
managing the workflow and administration of Media-related licensing accounts
that represent approximately $190 million – $200 million of SOCAN’s annual
domestic revenue.  This includes the management of SOCAN’s digital
strategy, negotiating new and renewal agreements with major international
online services as well as other domestic rights organizations, planning new
business campaigns, budgeting & forecasting activities and managing the
team to collect revenue from both new and existing Media accounts.  
As part of the Licensing Management team this
role provides the strategy and direction associated with Media-related accounts
and is responsible for ensuring that the Media team conforms to Licensing
quality assurance procedures and licensee service management.
RESPONSIBILITIES: 
  • Budgeting
    and forecasting activities for both revenue and expenses
  • Track
    internal and external trends and industry data for all Media tariffs, as
    well as some Media licensees, and prepare documents on trending
    information and industry projections
  • Collaborate
    with senior management on strategic contracts and new business development
    opportunities
  • Manage
    staff to ensure they follow departmental policies, processes and meet
    quality targets
  • Review
    and resolve escalated administrative/customer service issues
  • Negotiate
    terms, conditions and rates (including potential negotiation of rate
    splits with other domestic rights organizations) on experimental
    agreements with New Media licensees.
  • Prepare
    recommendations for tariff development, both new and existing tariffs
  • Develop
    campaigns for new groups of potential Media licensees, specifically New
    Media
  • Collaborate
    with Industry Relations team to seek out new Media-based partnerships
  • Collaborate
    with Communications & Marketing in the development of any Media
    related documents/content 
  • Collaborate
    with Legal department for Paralegal process and potential infringement or
    litigation cases
  • Collaborate
    with Legal, Finance and Distribution departments for various activities
  • Development
    of Media team’s annual operational plan
  • Prepare
    and conduct interim and annual performance reviews
  • Coach
    and mentor staff
  • Integration
    of Media team into standardized Licensing processes
  • Other
    duties, as required 
SKILLS: 
  • Undergraduate
    level degree in Business Administration, Media or Communication Studies
  • Knowledge
    of music and/or copyright industries a strong asset
  • Knowledge
    and familiarity with the media industry, including broadcast media, online
    music and AV services a strong asset
  • Proven
    experience negotiating agreements
  • Experience
    in budgets and forecasts
  • Strong
    analysis and problem solving skills 
  • Strong
    conflict resolution skills
  • Experience
    in international business an asset
  • Experience
    in development and execution of strategic activities
  • Experience
    with Microsoft Office and the Internet
  • Excellent
