The Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation operate a conventional filtration water production plant/system. The treatment process involves coagulation, flocculation, filtration and gaseous chlorine injection. Clear water to Monrovia and its environs is transmitted by means of electrical high service pumps (now diesel operated engine pumps) and two transmission mains (36” and 16”) reinforced concrete pipes.
The LWSC is looking for experienced professional chemist (Quality Control Chemist). The Chemist is responsible to Conduct qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses or experiments in laboratories for water quality or process control of the water treatment system; or Conduct chemical and physical laboratory tests to assist in making qualitative and quantitative analyses of raw and finished water. The Job involves coordinating, supervising, managing, or training others. Must be able to work independently and exercise sound judgment on problem definition, scoping, adoption and adaption of appropriate techniques, provide supervision and technical guidance.
Duties/Responsibilities
• Responsible for the water quality (chemical, physical, biological) monitoring and control of the treatment process on a day to day basis, to ensure a satisfactory quality of water supplied;
• Conduct qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses or experiments in laboratories for water quality or treatment process control ; or Conduct chemical and physical laboratory tests to assist in making qualitative and quantitative analyses of raw and finished water;
• Develop, improve, or customize processes, or analytical methods;
• Conduct quality control tests;
• Monitor water treatment chemical product quality to ensure compliance with standards and specifications;
• Monitor and interpret results of tests and analyses to ensure compliance with standards (international and national);
• Analyze Water treatment chemicals to determine chemical and physical properties, composition, relationships, or reactions using appropriate techniques;
• Maintain laboratory instruments to ensure proper working order and troubleshoot malfunctions when needed;
• Analyze test information to determine process or equipment operating efficiency or to diagnose malfunctions;
• Direct, coordinate, or advise personnel in test procedures for analyzing components or physical properties of Water;
• Prepare test solutions, compounds, or reagents for laboratory personnel to conduct tests;
• Write technical reports;
• Liaises with Supply and Treatment Manager in the regulation and control of water treatment process at the Plant;
• Advises plant operators of the appropriate setting for the treatment and dosing equipment;
• Plans and carries out schedules for sampling of the raw water, water treatment process and water quality monitoring;
• Undertake any other duties as directed by Management.
Knowledge/Experience Required:
Chemistry: Knowledge of the water treatment chemicals and their composition, structure, and properties of the substances. This includes uses of chemicals and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal
Methods;
Production and Processing: Knowledge of drinking water production processes, quality testing, analysis and process control;
Knowledgeable about Tools and technology used.

Monitoring: Monitoring/Assessing performance of water treatment system processes to provide technical advice to make improvements or take corrective action.

Specific qualifications/technical speciality:
• Bachelor Degree in Chemistry; Master Degree is an added advantage;
• Demonstrated experience and expertise in conducting chemical and physical laboratory tests to assist in making qualitative and quantitative analyses of raw and finished water; and minimum 5+ years of work-related experience, on-the-job training, and/or vocational training;
• Previous experience and expertise conducting qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses or experiments in laboratories for water quality or treatment process control for water treatment system/plant; and carrying out chemical and physical laboratory test on water quality;
• Excellent communications, organizational and management skills, including assessment report writing;
• Fluency in English is essential.
