Kigali records 21 new Coronavirus in the past 24 hours

On Wednesday, 22 July, Rwanda reported 34 new Covid-19 cases, most of which were recorded in Kigali.

According to a statement by the Ministry of Health, of the new cases, 21 were confirmed in Kigali and were stated to be positive case contacts as well as residents of villages locked up in the capital.

Since the end of last month, Kigali has undergone a jump in reported cases after a few months of being deemed one of the safest places in the world in the event of a pandemic.

Other new cases include six reported cases from the Rusizi district, four confirmed cases in the Nyamasheke district, two in the Kirehe district and one in the Ngoma district.

On the same day, 19 recoveries were reported in the country.

Data were collected from 4,613 sample tests performed during the last 24 hours.

In total, 225,652 sample tests have been carried out in Rwanda since mid-March, when the first case of the pandemic was confirmed on the country’s soil.

After the outbreak, a total of 1,689 Covid-19 cases have been confirmed in Rwanda, of which 867 have now recovered.

The pandemic also claimed the lives of five persons, two of whom were peacekeepers working on the UN mission.
