Liberia’s contraception prevalence rate is 11.4%. The average Liberian woman has six children, the fifth highest fertility rate in the world. Accordingly, Liberia has one of the highest maternal mortality ratios (MMR) in the world with an estimated 994 women dying per 100,000 live births. Increasing access to contraception is one of the key strategies in reducing maternal mortality in Liberia.
In order to address the unmet need for family planning in Liberia, the IRC will be piloting a community based family planning program in Lofa and Montserrado Counties. The Community Based Family Planning (CBFP) Officer in Monrovia will be responsible for training and supervising a cadre of nurse aides on family planning counseling and distribution of selected FP commodities. The CBFP will also coordinate with other members for the IRC health team, clinical staff at health selected health facilities, and the Montserrado County Health Team on family planning initiatives and training.
Job Description:
Objective and responsibilities of position
• Provide day-to-day supervision, training, coaching and mentoring to community health volunteers and nurse aids in community-based family planning activities;
• Facilitate monthly community meetings to discuss family planning programs;
• Attend county and national level strategy meetings on community-based family planning programs;
• Assist in planning and carrying out formal training for community health volunteers and nurse aids on community based family planning;
• Collaborate with Project Coordinator in development of supervision tools and data collection forms to be used by community health volunteers;
• Provide supportive supervision to health facility staff on family planning counseling and service provision;
• Monitor counseling and service provision according to MOHSW protocols;
• Ensure proper documentation of project activities;
• Complete monthly progress reports;
• Support appropriate requisitions for family planning commodities from health facilities to the county pharmacy;
• Identify material needs and assist with procurement procedures;
• Collaborate with IRC management in program planning and implementation;
• Other duties as determined by the Project Coordinator.
Requirements:
Essential:
• Registered Nurse,,/or Physician Assistant with current Liberian license;
• Minimum of 5 years work experience;
• Experience in supervising, training and coaching others;
• Experience in family planning training and counseling;
• Experience working with and training TTMs and gCHVs;
• Ability to act as part of the multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary team;
• Ability to organize and prioritize workload, using initiative when appropriate;
• Good command of English, including writing skills;
• Computer skills: competent in basic word and excel.
Desirable:
• Work experience in a similar role with another Non Government Organization (NGO);
• Experience working with communities in Montserrado County;
• Experience with monitoring and evaluation of projects;
• Experience working with indicators and objectives.
