The Halton Food Council (HFC) is an independent, non-profit organization
composed of volunteer members representing a wide range of sectors and
interests within our community. Since its establishment in 2009, the Council
has been engaged in a number of initiatives to develop awareness of food system
opportunities and issues and to promote food security with a common voice.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Overview
This position is open to a post-secondary student interested in building on
her/his academic studies through research on food waste and in gaining
knowledge translation and mobilization skills through the development of
related educational materials as part of a consumer campaign. The successful
candidate will also have the opportunity to pursue research into an area of
food waste that is of particular interest to her/him.
The successful candidate will report to the HFC supervisory team who will
provide on-going supervision and support through various communication channels
including e-mail, phone, on-site (Oakville) and Skype/teleconference meetings.
With respect to communications and meetings with project workgroups, the same
will apply.
Key responsibilities
• Prepare a white paper that includes a brief overview of the environmental,
social, and economic aspects of food waste through the food system and case
studies
• Prepare a slide deck that supports the white paper
• Assist with the development of educational materials for schools and the
general public with a focus on food waste reduction at the consumer level
• Provide food waste related materials for HFC communications tools as required
• Present research findings to the HFC at the end of the assignment and other
stakeholders as required
Qualifications
• Post-secondary student preferably with a background in food waste related
studies
• Knowledgeable about food systems
• Experience in environmental education would be an asset
• Excellent research, analytical, and writing skills and attention to detail
• Demonstrated creativity with a strong interest in developing educational materials
• Ability to work independently on the research assignments and as a team
member of the project workgroups
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines
• Strong oral communications skills
• Proficient in using MS Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Meets the requirements of the Canada Summer Jobs grant: between the ages of
15-30 at the start of employment; was a full-time student during the previous
academic year and intends to return to school full-time for the next academic
year; legally entitled to work in Canada; is a Canadian citizen, permanent
resident or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the
Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
Compensation
$11.25/hour
This position is funded through a Canada Summer Jobs grant for 10 weeks at 40
hours per week.
